Cylinder Head - Installation

INSTALLATION

NOTE: This procedure covers either the left or right cylinder head.

NOTE: Make sure there is no oil or coolant in the cylinder head bolt holes.

1. Clean all surfaces of engine block and cylinder heads Procedures.

CAUTION: Remove all gasket material from cylinder head and block using a plastic scraper only. DO NOT use a metal scraper, as damage to sealing surface may occur.

2. Install new cylinder head gasket(s) on the engine block with markings (1) upward. Assure all coolant passages and bolt holes align properly.

CAUTION: Cylinder head bolts are coated, DO NOT oil bolts.

3. Install cylinder head(s) over dowel pins. Install new cylinder head bolts 1-12. Tighten cylinder head bolts 1-12 in the sequence shown in using a three step tightening sequence:
a. First to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
b. Second to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
c. Third rotate an additional 90°.
4. After cylinder head bolts 1-12 have been tightened to specifications, install and tighten cylinder head tappet gallery bolts 13 - 20 in sequence shown to 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.).

5. Inspect the push rod (2) tips for wear and straightness. Replace worn or bent push rods as necessary.

NOTE: Install push rods and rocker arms one at a time. This will minimize the possibility of dropping a push rod inside the engine.

6. Install push rods (2).

7. Install rocker arms (1,2) and pedestal assemblies into their original positions Valve Rocker Arm - Installation. Ensure push rods are seated properly under each rocker arm. Tighten rocker arm bolts to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

8. Install exhaust manifold(s) (4) and gasket(s) (1)Exhaust Manifold - Installation.

9. Install cylinder head covers Cylinder Head Cover(s) - Installation.

10. Install fuel rail (2).

11. Install intake manifold Intake Manifold - Installation.
12. Raise and support the vehicle.

13. Connect the exhaust system to the exhaust manifold using new V-Band clamps (1).
14. Drain the engine oil.
15. Lower the vehicle.
16. Fill engine oil to the proper level Description and Operation, .

17. Fill the cooling system Service and Repair.
18. Install the air cleaner assembly (1) Air Cleaner Body - Installation.

19. Connect negative battery cable (1). Install battery cover. Close trunk lid.
20. Start engine and inspect for leaks.
