Spur Gear Unit

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Sealant

Removing

Engine secured the scissor lift platform (VAS 6131 A) and separated from the transmission. Refer to => [ Engine and Transmission, Separating ] Engine and Transmission, Separating or secured to the engine/transmission holder => [ Engine, Securing to Engine and Transmission Holder ] Engine, Securing to Engine and Transmission Holder.

- Remove the left exhaust manifold with catalytic converter. Refer to => [ Left Exhaust Manifold with Catalytic Converter ] Left Exhaust Manifold With Catalytic Converter.

- Remove timing chain lower cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.

- Remove the hose clamp on the A/C compressor drive dust cap - arrow -.





- Remove the power take-off drive chain. Refer to => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain ] Power Take-Off Drive Chain.

- Remove bolts - 1 to 6 -.





- Remove the spur gear unit - 1 - and remove the oil pump drive - 2 -.





Installing

Replace O-ring.

- Replace the shaft seal - 3 - => [ Shaft Seal for the Power Steering Pump
Drive ] Power Take-Off Assembly Overview, and semi-circular seal - 4 - => [ Semi-Circular Ring ] Power Take-Off Assembly Overview in the power steering pump drive if damaged.

- Remove any sealant still on the spur gear unit and cylinder block.

- Clean the sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.

Note the expiration date of the sealing compound.

- Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter approximately 1.5 mm).





CAUTION!
The lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant.

Do not apply sealant bead thicker than indicated.

- Apply sealant bead - arrow - to clean spur gear unit sealing surface as illustrated.





Sealant bead thickness: 2.0 mm

- Install O-ring - 1 - and secure using some grease.

Install the spur gear unit within five minutes of applying the sealant.

Use a hose clamp appropriate for the model.

- The new hose clamp - 1 - must slide through the hole in the guide frame, over the dust cap - 3 - and onto the A/C compressor input shaft - 2 - while the spur gear unit is still removed.





- Install the oil pump drive - 2 -.





- Position the spur gear unit - 1 - onto the drive shaft.

- Turn the gears back and forth and mount the spur gear unit.

- Tighten the bolts => [ Spur Gear Unit, Tightening
Specifications and Sequence ] Power Take-Off Assembly Overview.





- Slide the dust cap - arrow - onto the end of the shaft for the A/C compressor drive spur gear with the hose clamp already installed and secure it.





The rest of the installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:

- Install the power take-off drive chain. Refer to => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain ] Power Take-Off Drive Chain.

- Install timing chain lower cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.

- Install the left exhaust manifold with catalytic converter. Refer to => [ Left Exhaust Manifold with Catalytic Converter ] Left Exhaust Manifold With Catalytic Converter.
