Checking the Brake failure warning lamp I

Checking the signal with the ignition off




- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the brake fluid level switch.
Connect a voltmeter between brake fluid level switch connector terminal 2 and ground.









The voltmeter should read 0 V.

OK - Checking the signal with the ignition on

Not OK - Checking the cable

- Ignition on
Connect a voltmeter between brake fluid level switch connector terminal 2 and ground. Wait approximately 5 seconds.

Hint: The ABS control module will attempt to light the lamp in the first three seconds after the ignition is switched on.









The voltmeter should read 12 V.

OK - Checking the control module connector

Not OK - Checking the cable

Checking the control module connector
- Expose and disconnect the connector from the control module.
- Check the cable terminals in both the female and male halves of the connector.

Note! The cable terminals must not be damaged or pressed back.

Install and disconnect the connector from the control module.
Check that the connector locks into the control module.
- 1. The female and male connector halves are OK.
- 2. The male terminal on the connector is defective.
- 3. The female terminal on the connector is defective.

Checking the cable
Check the cable between brake fluid switch connector terminal 2 and combined instrument panel connector B terminal: 14 for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.










Continue - Verification

Checking the voltage in the cable








- Ignition off
- Disconnect the ABS control module.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between ground and control module connector terminal: 21.





The voltmeter should read approximately 12 V.

OK - Replacing the component

Not OK - Checking the resistance in the cable

Replacing the component
Check the cable. Repair the cable: Replace the cable terminal.

Replacing the component
There is no open-circuit in the cable between the connector and combined instrument panel connector B terminal: 14.
The fault is in the ABS control module.
Replace the control module according to: Replacing the ABS control module Replacing The ABS Control Module , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.

Check the cable between brake fluid switch connector terminal 2 and combined instrument panel connector B terminal: 14 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Check the connectors for contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the combined instrument panel from the connector according to Instrument Instrument.
Connect an ohmmeter between control module connector terminal: 21 and combined instrument panel connector B terminal: 14













The ohmmeter should read approximately 0ohms.

OK - Replacing the component

Not OK - Checking the component

Replacing the component
There is no open-circuit in the cable between combined instrument panel connector B terminal: 14 and control module connector B terminal: 21.
The fault is in the combined instrument panel.
Replace the combined instrument panel according to Instrument Instrument , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.

Check the cable for an open-circuit.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows:








- Ignition off.
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.
- Ignition on.
Check that the lamp lights when the ABS control module carries out the lamp check. The lamp must light and go out after approximately 2 seconds.

Does the lamp light for 2 seconds?

Yes - VERIFIED
