Fault in the sensor circuit. Intermittent fault

Checking wiring and terminals
Check the wheel sensor and control module connectors for contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring And Terminals. Intermittent Faults , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Check the cable between the female half of the wheel sensor connector terminal 1 and the female half of the control module connector terminal:
7 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-311), left front wheel.
5 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-312), right front wheel.
9 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-313), left rear wheel.
3 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-314), right rear wheel.
for an intermittent open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring And Terminals. Intermittent Faults , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-. Check for an intermittent short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring And Terminals. Intermittent Faults , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Check the cable between the female half of the wheel sensor connector terminal 2 and the female half of the control module connector terminal:
6 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-311), left front wheel.
4 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-312), right front wheel.
8 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-313), left rear wheel.
1 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-314), right rear wheel.
for an intermittent open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring And Terminals. Intermittent Faults , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Check the cable between the female half of the wheel sensor connector terminal 1 and 2 and the female half of the control module connector terminal:
6 and 7 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-311), left front wheel.
4 and 5 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-312), right front wheel.
8 and 9 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-313), left rear wheel.
1 and 3 (diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ABS-314), right rear wheel.
for a short-circuit to each other according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring And Terminals. Intermittent Faults , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.













Select "Continue" when the fault has been remedied.

Check that all wheels and tires are the same size.





Are all wheels and tires the same size?

Yes - Checking wheel bearings

No - Remedy the component

Checking wheel bearings
Check the wheel bearings on all wheels for play. Check that they are not sticking.

Are all wheel bearings OK?

Yes - Checking the brakes

No - Remedy the component

Remedy the component
- The wheels and tires are different sizes.
Remedy so that all sizes are the same.

Select Continue when the fault has been remedied.

Checking the brakes
- A sticking brake can block one or both wheels when the car is being driven. This will mean that the wheel sensor signal is not transmitted.
Check that the brake calipers are not sticking and blocking the wheels.
Check that the parking brake lever, cables or brake calipers are not sticking.
Check that the parking brake brake shoes and cables are correctly adjusted.





Are all brakes OK?

Yes - Checking the brakes

No - Remedy the component(s)

Remedy the component
- There is a fault in one or more of the wheel bearings.
Remedy the wheel bearings as necessary.

Select Continue when the fault has been remedied.

Checking the brakes
- Defective brakes resulting in minimal braking effect in one or more wheels. This affects the control module ABS control during braking.
Check the brakes for the following symptoms:
• poor braking effect
• the brakes pull to one side.





Are all brakes OK?

Yes - Checking wheel sensors

No - Remedy the component

Remedy the component(s)
- One or more brakes are sticking.
Remedy these brakes as necessary.

Select Continue when the fault has been remedied.

Checking wheel sensors
Check that the wheel sensors are installed securely against the shaft / hub. Remove any dirt between the sensor and the mating surface.





Are the wheel sensors correctly installed?

Yes - Checking the wheel sensor and pulse wheel

No - Remedy the component

Remedy the component
- Poor braking effect from one or more brakes.
Remedy these brakes as necessary.

Select Continue when the fault has been remedied.

Checking the wheel sensor and pulse wheel
- Front wheel wheel sensors and pulse wheels: Remove the wheel.
- Rear wheel wheel sensors and pulse wheels: Remove the wheel and brake caliper according to Refurbishing rear brake caliper Refurbishing Rear Brake Caliper , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-. Remove the brake disc according to Replacement of rear brake disc Brake Disc Rear, Replacing , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Check that the tip of the wheel sensor is undamaged.
Check that the pulse wheel is secure. Check that the pulse wheel is free of damage and scratches etc.
Check that the clearance between the wheel sensor and the pulse wheel is 0.2-1.8 mm.
Check the pulse wheel according to Checking pulse wheel lateral runout Testing and Inspection , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.

Are the pulse wheel and the wheel sensor OK?

Yes - Checking for interference

No - Remedy the component

Remedy the component
- One or more wheel sensor is loose or incorrectly installed.
Front wheel wheel sensors and pulse wheels: Pull off the wheel sensor according to Front wheel sensor, replacement Front Wheel Sensor, Replacement , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Replace the damaged wheel sensor according to Front wheel sensor, replacement Front Wheel Sensor, Replacement , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Rear wheel wheel sensors and pulse wheels: Pull off the wheel sensor according to Rear wheel sensor, replacement Rear Wheel Sensor, Replacement , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.
Replace the damaged wheel sensor according to Rear wheel sensor, replacement Rear Wheel Sensor, Replacement , Section 5 (50-59), Brakes, 1996-.





Select Continue when the fault has been remedied.

Checking for interference
Check that the wiring for the wheel sensors is not too near sources of interference, such as electric motors, ignition cables, mobile telephone cables etc.
Remedy as necessary.

- The pulse wheel and wheel sensor are not OK.
Remedy these as necessary.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows:




- Ignition off.
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.
- Disconnect VCT 2000 so that the diagnostics are stopped.
- Ignition on.




- Test drive the car according to Test driving Test Driving.
- Stop the car. Do not switch off the ignition.
- Connect VCT 2000 to the VIDA station. Connect the VIDA station to the data link connector (DLC) in the car.
- Read off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).





Has the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) disappeared?

Yes - VERIFIED
