K. System Pressure and Stall Speed Check
K. System pressure and stall speed check
Special tools: 999 2531, 5074
K1
Check oil level.
See operations H2-H5. H. Oil Inspection
K2
Connect manometer
Undo the airfilter.
Remove transmission test plug and fit nipple 9995074.
Connect hose and manometer 9992531 to the nipple.
K3
Start engine and allow it to idle in position N
Check the engine idle speed. See table below.
K4
Depress brake pedal.
Move gear selector into the various positions and record svstem pressure.
K5
Check stall speed while monitoring line pressure.
Stall speed test gives an indication of condition of the torque converter, the transmission clutches and the engine.
For the test to be accurate the following conditions must be met:
- engine must be properly tuned
- correct line pressure
- correct oil level and transmission at normal operating temperature.
NOTE: Never conduct a stall speed check when line pressure is too low.
K6
Check
Attach an engine speed sensor (rpm sensor) so that it can be read from the driver's seat.
The air conditioning (A/C) must be turned off. Block all four wheels. Start engine.
Important! Apply parking brake and press down hard on the brake pedal with left foot during test.
Move gear selector to position D, depress accelerator pedal (AP) to floor for maximum 5 seconds and read off maximum engine rpm and line pressure. Compare with the table below.
NOTE: Do not test stall speed for longer than 5 seconds.
Repeat test with gear selector in position R.
Compare with table.
If the speed exceeds the table value, proceed to K7. If the speed is below the table value, proceed to K8.
K7
High stall speed:
The test conditions described at K5 above must apply here also.
Is the 0 - 100 km/h (0-60 mph) acceleration time normal?
If the stall speed recoreded exceeds the normal value by more than 300 rpm:
- Check whether oil is discolored or has a burnt smell as a operation H1. H. Oil Inspection
If the oil appears normal replace the torque converter.
(Refer to replacement of transmission U1-U65 U. Transmission, Replace for procedure - includes replacing torque converter.)
If the oil is dirty this indicates warm or burnt cluth plates, replace transmission according to procedures U1-U65. U. Transmission, Replace
Test stall speed again after replacing transmission.
K8
Low stall speed:
The test conditions described at K5 above must apply here also.
If the stall speed recorded exceeds the normal value by more than 300 rpm:
Replace torque convverter. (Refer to replacement of transmission U1-U65 for procedure - includes replacing torque converter.) U. Transmission, Replace
Check stall speed again after replacement of torque converter. If the fault recurs, replace transmission according to U1- U65. U. Transmission, Replace
Noises:
Replace transmission as per U1-U65. U. Transmission, Replace
Test stall speed again after replacing transmission.
