H. Oil Inspection

Cleanliness:

Important! Pay particular attention to cleanliness when working on the transmission, particularly when inspecting and, if necessary, changing the oil. Clean around the filler pipe and the drain plug. Always use clean containers. Make sure that the workplace is free of dirt and dust. Make sure that you do not get any oil on your skin. Check oil level in the transmission only if oil leaks are suspected.

Transmission fluid grade: ATF oil which meets demands for both Dexron II E and Ford Mercon

Radio codes:

NOTE: Make a note of the radio code before disconnecting the battery leads and the car is without voltage supply. Re-enter the code when the work has been completed.

H. Oil inspection

Oil, quality check

H1

Check the oil

NOTE: Only ATF oil which meets the demands for Dexron II E and Ford Mercon may be used.

Check the oil by taking a sample with the dipstick.

Discolored or burnt smell?

- Check whether the diagnostic unit has recorded any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC code 2-3-5).
- If DTC 2-3-5 is displayed, smell the oil.
- Also fault-trace the transmission per DTC 2-3-5. Testing and Inspection

- Change oil, see procedures J1-J7. J. Oil Change

Is there water in the oil (grey discoloration)

- Determine the reason why water is present in the oil.
- Replace transmission according to U1-U59 and flush oil cooler and oil lines clean according to U27. U. Transmission, Replace

H2

Check oil level

Conditions

Flat surface, parking brake set, foot brakes applied, engine idling, gear selector in position P.

H3

Move the gear selector through all positions, stopping in each position for 3 seconds.

Return gear selector to position P and wait 2 minutes before checking oil level.
The dipstick must be pushed down completely in the dipstick tube.

NOTE: Wipe dipstick with a nylon cloth or the equivalent, i.e. a matenal free from lint and loose threads.

H4

Low Level

Check temperature chart before filling with oil.

NOTE: The level varies depending on oil temperature!

The difference between MAX- and MIN- volume is 0.5 liters (0.5 US qts) Oil temperature in the transmission can be checked using Volvo Scan Tools (Diagnostic Key or Volvo System Tester) in DTM 5. Testing and Inspection

At room temperature (+20 °C = 68 °F) the level should be between the bottom of the dipstick and the second mark down from the cold range, see illustration.

The "cold range" (+40 °C = 104 °F) is reached after approx. 15 minutes idling, while the "hot range" (+80 °C = 176 °F) is reached after approx. 30 minutes highway driving at an air temperature of +15 °C (59 °F). The check should be carried out at an oil temperature of +80°C (176 °F).

High level (overfilling)

Warning! The oil may be very hot if the car has just been driven. Avoid contact with your skin. The transmission must not be operated if the oil level is too high due to overfilling. This can cause increased operating temperatures and oil leakage.

H5

Drain off oil

Undo the drain plug.

Allow some of the oil to run out and reinstall the plug.
Torque nut to 40 Nm (18 ft. lbs)

Check the level (see above), taking the temperature into consideration. See chart above.
