J 21366 Converter Holding Strap
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection).
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the catalytic converter guard. Refer to Catalytic Converter Guard Replacement (Service and Repair).
4. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (Service and Repair).
5. Drain the transmission then reinstall the fluid pan. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid, Fluid Pan and/or Filter Replacement (Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement).
6. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement).
7. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Propeller Shaft Replacement).
8. Remove the torque converter access plugs (1, 2).
9. Remove the left flex plate inspection cover bolt (2).
10. Remove the left flex plate inspection cover (1).
11. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (Service and Repair).
12. Remove the right flex plate inspection cover bolt (2).
13. Remove the right flex plate inspection cover (1).
14. Mark the torque converter relationship to the flex plate.
15. Remove the flex plate to torque converter bolts (1).
16. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
17. Remove the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement (Transmission Support Replacement).
18. Remove the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement (Service and Repair).
19. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
20. Remove the transmission heat shield. Refer to Transmission Heat Shield Replacement (Transmission Heat Shield Replacement).
21. Remove the vent hose from the transmission and transfer case.
22. Remove the transmission electrical harness retaining screw (1).
23. Disconnect the transmission electrical harness connector (2).
24. Remove the fuel pipe bracket screw (2).
25. Remove the fuel pipe bracket nut (1).
26. disconnect the shift control cable (3) from the range select lever (4)
27. Remove the shift control cable retainer (2).
28. Remove the shift control cable (3) from the cable bracket (1).
29. Remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement (Transfer Case Assembly Replacement).
30. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement).
31. Plug the transmission oil cooler lines and line connection in the transmission case to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
32. Remove the bolts and studs (1-8) securing the transmission to the engine.
33. Pull the transmission straight back.
34. Install the J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
35. Remove the transmission from the vehicle while simultaneously removing the fluid level indicator tube.
36. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines if necessary. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test (Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test).
37. Transfer any remaining components to the new transmission if the transmission is being replaced.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
2. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
3. Raise the transmission into place while simultaneously installing the fluid indicator tube.
4. Remove the J 21366 from the transmission.
5. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flex plate and the torque converter.
The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
6. Install the bolts and studs (1-8) securing the transmission to the engine.
Tighten the bolts and studs to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
7. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement).
8. Install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement (Transfer Case Assembly Replacement).
9. Install the shift control cable (3) to the cable bracket (1).
10. Install the shift control cable retainer (2).
11. Connect the shift control cable (3) to the range select lever (4)
12. Install the fuel pipe bracket nut (1).
Tighten the nut to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
13. Install the fuel pipe bracket screw (2).
Tighten the screw to 9 Nm (80 lb in).
14. Connect the transmission electrical harness connector (2).
15. Install the transmission electrical harness retaining screw (1).
Tighten the screw to 9 Nm (80 lb in).
16. Install the vent hose to the transmission and transfer case.
17. Install the transmission heat shield. Refer to Transmission Heat Shield Replacement (Transmission Heat Shield Replacement).
18. Raise the transmission to installed height.
19. Install the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement (Service and Repair).
20. Install the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement (Transmission Support Replacement).
21. Remove the transmission jack.
22. If reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the bolt threads and apply LOCTITE 242, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489), or equivalent to the threads prior to installation.
23. Install the flex plate to torque converter bolts (1).
Tighten the bolts to 65 Nm (48 lb ft).
24. Install the right flex plate inspection cover (1).
25. Install the right flex plate inspection cover bolt (2).
Tighten the bolt to 12 Nm (106 lb in).
26. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (Service and Repair).
27. Install the left flex plate inspection cover (1).
28. Install the left flex plate inspection cover bolt (2).
Tighten the bolt to 12 Nm (106 lb in).
29. Install the torque converter access plugs (1, 2).
30. Install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Propeller Shaft Replacement).
31. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement).
32. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (Service and Repair).
33. Install the catalytic converter guard. Refer to Catalytic Converter Guard Replacement (Service and Repair).
34. Lower the vehicle.
35. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection)
36. Fill the transmission to the proper level. Refer to Fluid Capacity Specifications (Capacity Specifications).
Note: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.
Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the engine control module (ECM), powertrain control module (PCM), or transmission control module (TCM) will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.
37. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Transmission Adaptive Functions (Transmission Adaptive Functions).
38. If a replacement transmission is installed, program the TCM. Refer to Control Module References (Programming and Relearning).
