Camshaft Timing Chains

Camshaft Timing Chains

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Locking Pin (T40071)

Removing

Engine remove, transmission separated from the engine. Refer to => [ Engine and Transmission, Separating ] Engine and Transmission, Separating.

Secure the engine to the scissor lift platform (VAS 6131 A) or to an engine/transmission holder. Refer to => [ Engine, Securing to Engine and Transmission Holder ] Engine, Securing to Engine and Transmission Holder.

- Remove timing chain lower cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.

- Remove the camshaft timing chains from the camshafts. Refer to => [ Camshaft Timing Chains, Removing from Camshafts ] Camshaft Timing Chains, Removing From Camshafts.

CAUTION!
If the running direction is reversed on a used camshaft timing chain, it could be destroyed.

Paint arrows to mark the timing chain running direction so it can be installed again. Do not mark the camshaft timing chain with a punch, notch or something similar.

Left Camshaft Timing Chain:

- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove the left chain tension and left camshaft timing chain.

Right Camshaft Timing Chain:

- Push the chain tensioner guide rail for the camshaft timing chain in direction of - arrow - and secure the chain tensioner (T40071).

- Loosen the bolt - 1 - for the camshaft timing chain drive sprocket just 11/2 turns but do not remove the bolt.

- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove the right chain tension and right camshaft timing chain.

Installing

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Camshaft Timing Chains Assembly Overview ] Camshaft Timing Chains Assembly Overview.

If the tensioner was removed from the chain tensioner, then pay close attention to the installed position: the hole in the bottom of the housing faces the chain tensioner and the piston faces the tensioning rail.

Replace bolts which have been tightened to an additional torque.

Replace the chain tensioner seals.

CAUTION!
Risk of damaging valves and piston crowns.

If camshafts are rotated, crankshaft may not rest with any piston at TDC.

- Press the guide rails for the left and right camshaft timing chain tensioner in - arrow - as far as the stop and secure the chain tensioner with a (T40071).

- Clean the oil strainer - 2 - in both chain tensioners if necessary.

Pay close attention when installing the oil screen on the groove in the chain tensioner.

- Mount and attach the rear seal - 3 - onto the chain tensioner - 1 -.

Left Camshaft Timing Chain:

- Position the left camshaft timing chain according to the markings made during removal as shown in the illustration.

- Fasten bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.

Right Camshaft Timing Chain:

- Insert the chain tensioner on the right cylinder head and position the camshaft timing chain according to the markings made during removal, as shown in the illustration.

- Fasten bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.

- Tighten the bolt - 1 - for the right camshaft timing chain drive sprocket.

Continued for Both Sides:

- Remove the (T40071).

The rest of the installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:

- Position the camshaft timing chain on the camshafts => [ Installing ] Camshaft Timing Chains, Removing From Camshafts.

- Install timing chain lower cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
