Opening control system
Note! Cleanliness: Cleanliness is extremely important when working on automatic transmissions. Before starting work: Clean the transmission and surrounding area, and ensure that the workplace is free of dust and dirt. Components should be dried with compressed air. Under no circumstances may rags or waste which leave lint or threads be used! Avoid skin contact with transmission fluid. Transmission oil grade: Only automatic transmission fluid which fulfills both Dexron IIE/III and Ford Mercon standards.
Preparations
See Replacing control system, AW50-42 Service and Repair.
Checking resistance
Solenoids S1, S2, SL:
Measure resistance between pin in solenoid connector and transmission ground terminal.
The correct resistance should be: 12-16 ohms.
Solenoid STH:
Measure resistance between pins in solenoid connector.
The correct resistance should be: 3-5 ohms.
Readings, solenoids
If solenoid S1, S2 or SL have an incorrect value (see above):
Replace solenoid according to Replacing solenoid.
If solenoid STH has an incorrect value:
Replace entire control system according to Replacing control system, AW50-42 Service and Repair and Replacing control system, AW50-42 Service and Repair. (Solenoid STH is calibrated together with the control system.)
If solenoid resistances are correct:
Check solenoid cable harness according to Inspecting / replacing the cable harness for the solenoids, AW50-42 Inspecting/Cable Harness To Solenoids.
If the cable harness is faulty replace according to Inspecting / replacing the cable harness for the solenoids, AW50-42 Inspecting/Cable Harness To Solenoids.
Replacing solenoid
Remove solenoid screw.
Remove solenoid from control system.
Install a new solenoid.
Apply a little gasolineeum jelly to solenoid O-ring (S1, S2, SL).
Install solenoid. Tighten screw.
Tightening torque: 7 Nm.
Reconnect solenoid connector.
Connector/cable colors:
Solenoid S1: White/white
Solenoid S2: Black/black
Solenoid SL: Black/yellow
Solenoid STH: Black/blue, brown
Installing components
Reinstall control system cover, oil pipe and other components according to Replacing control system, AW50-42 Service and Repair
Filling and checking oil
Fill transmission with oil and check level according to Checking oil level, AW50-42 Checking Oil Level.
Checking diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
Check and erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
