Replacing the transmission cable
Removing engine compartment components
Removing the battery and air cleaner (ACL)
Park the car on a level surface. Do not apply the parking brake.
Remove:
- The battery
- The air cleaner (ACL) housing. See Replacing the air cleaner (ACL) Replacing Air Cleaner (ACL).
- The battery shelf
Disconnecting the transmission cable
Remove:
- The retaining clip and washer from the lever
- The mechanical cable from the clip on the bracket for the connectors
- The mechanical cable bracket and the cable from the lever
- The heat deflector plate on the firewall (three nuts).
Removing passenger compartment components
Removing the rear center console
Remove:
- the waste paper basket
- The two screws at the rear edge
- The rubber mat and the screw at the front edge
- The rear center console.
Removing the front center console
Remove:
- The center console locker under the radio or the large-fronted radio
- The two screws. Pull out the holder with the ashtray
- The connectors
- The switches on the panel frame
- The panel frame around the gear selector panel.
- The two screws in the rear edge of the center console.
- If the car has an anti-theft device:
The bracket for the alarm unit
Removing the front center console, continued
Remove the left and right side panels.
Remove the panel with the switches. Disconnect all the connectors.
Fully apply the parking brake.
Remove the center console.
Removing the transmission cable
Disconnecting within the gear selector assembly
Disconnect the transmission cable from the gear selector assembly.
Use flat-nosed pliers to remove the cable pin.
Remove the retaining clip securing the cable sleeve to the gear selector assembly.
Remove the gear selector assembly. Remove the cable.
Removing the transmission cable
Slacken off the frame for the rubber grommet in the cowl panel (two nuts).
Remove the cable by pulling it into the passenger compartment.
Note! Pulling the cable and bracket through the engine compartment is a two man operation.
Installing the gear selector cable
Installing the gear selector cable
Carefully insert the cable from the passenger compartment into the engine compartment.
Note! Pulling the cable and bracket through the engine compartment is a two man operation.
Caution! Take care not to damage the cable or sleeve by bending it excessively. Take care not to damage the cable boot.
Locate the cable in the gear selector assembly. Install the gear selector assembly in the car (four screws).
Torque: 25 Nm.
Install:
- The cable sleeve in the gear selector assembly. Lock the sleeve with the clip.
- The cable on the gear selector with the pin.
- The frame over the rubber grommet in the cowl panel (two nuts). Torque: 25 Nm.
Installing center consoles
Installing the front center console
Install:
- The gear selector panel in the center console
- The panel with the switches by the gear selector and the connectors
- The holder with ashtray. Connect the connectors.
Install the screws in the front and rear edges
- If the car has an anti-theft device: The bracket for the anti-theft alarm.
Tighten the rear screw to: 40 Nm.
- The center console locker under the radio or the large-fronted radio
- The side panels.
Installing the rear center console
Install:
- The rear center console
- The screw in the front edge and the rubber mat
- The two screws at the rear edge
- the waste paper basket.

Adjust the transmission cable according to Adjusting the transmission cable Adjusting The Transmission Cable.
Install:
- The heat deflector plate (three screws).
- The battery shelf
- The air cleaner (ACL) housing. See Replacing the air cleaner (ACL) Replacing Air Cleaner (ACL).
- The battery. Connect the cables.
