Seat belts

Checking and replacing the front seat seat belts
The front seats in all S40/V40 models are equipped with pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners. It is impossible to replace the seat belts only.

Function test, all seat belts




Symptoms of a deployed seat belt tensioner:
- when the seat belt is pulled out, it sticks or jerks
- the seat belt cannot be stretched out at all or only very little.

Preparations




- Make a note of the anti-theft radio code
- Switch off the ignition
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal
- Remove the B-post panel.

Removing the seat belt tensioner from the B-post




- Disconnect the connector from the seat belt tensioner
- Remove the seat belt reel from the B-post (2 screws)
- Pull the seat belt upwards and outwards from the lower panel on the B-post.

Checking the seat belt tensioner




- Insert a wire in the pipe on the seat belt tensioner. This is to check the position of the piston.
Position A:
the seat belt tensioner has deployed.
- Replace both the seat belt tensioners.
Position B:
the seat belt tensioner has not deployed.

Replacing the seat belt tensioner, general




- If possible, move the seat to its lowest position
- Detach the mounting for the seat belt from the seat.

Installing the seat belt tensioner on the B-post




- Clean the mounting holes
- Install the seat belt in the lowest panel on the B-post
- Ensure that the rod is in the bracket
- Tighten the two screws to 48 Nm
- Connect the connector to the seat belt tensioner.

Installing the seat belt on the seat
- Install the seat belt on the seat. Tighten to 48 Nm.

Replacing the seat belt buckle on the front seat




- Remove the rear center console. See Dashboard Dashboard
- Move the seat to its rearmost position
- Remove the mounting for the seat belt buckle. Disconnect the wiring
- Clean the mounting point
- Install the new seat belt buckle. Tighten to 45 Nm
- Install the rear center console.

Replacing the rear seat belts, 4-door cars




- Remove the parcel shelf. See
- Angle the seats forward. Pull out the seat belt
- Remove the seat belt from the body at the side
- Remove the mounting screw. Remove the seat belt through the cargo compartment.
- Install in reverse order.
- Clean the mounting
- Apply locking fluid to the screws
- Tighten the screw. Tighten to 48 Nm
- Ensure that the new seat belt is not twisted.

Replacing the rear seat belts, 5-door cars




- Remove the C-post panel.
- Fold the seats forward
- Remove the seat belt mounting from the floor
- Remove the screw for the seat belt from the chassis support (between the C and D posts).
- Install in reverse order.
- Clean the mounting
- Apply locking fluid to the screws
- Tighten the screw. Tighten to 48 Nm.

Replacing rear seat belt buckles




- Fold the seat forward
- Remove the mounting screws. Remove the seat belt buckle.

Note! The mounting for the center belt is secured with a washer under the support on the left striker plate.

- Install in reverse order.
- Clean the mounting
- Apply locking fluid to the screws
- Tighten the screw. Tighten to 48 Nm.
