Caution! Cleanliness is extremely important when working on automatic transmissions. Use lint free paper or rags.
Caution! Read through the instructions before beginning work.
Removal
Preparations
Suck the oil from the transmission.
Take out a container for the oil.
Raise the car.
Remove:
- the splash guard under the engine. Blow and wipe clean around the transmission oil trough

Removing the accumulator housing from the transmission
Note! Check the routing of the oil pipe in the accumulator housing.
Remove the oil filter. See Transmission oil / oil filter, replacing Removal and Replacement.
Remove the 4 screws holding the accumulator housing in the transmission.
Fold down the housing with the oil pipes. Remove the oil pipes from the accumulator.
Disassembling the accumulator housing
Caution! Replace one piston at a time so that the springs are correctly installed during installation.
The thinnest spring should be against the terminal pipe.
Slacken off the remainder of the screws on the accumulator housing. Lift off the cover and the gasket.
Removing the pistons from the accumulator housing
Press the piston onto the spring so that the locating pin can be gripped.
Pull up the locating pin a little so that it releases from the mounting in the housing.
Work the locating pin with the piston side to side while at the same time pulling the piston up from the housing.
Use the same method for the other piston. Remove the spring from the piston.
Check:
- for dirt or other particles in the housing
- that the springs are intact.
Blow the housing clean.
Installation
Installing new pistons on the accumulator housing
Install the locating pin and the spring in the housing.
Apply petroleum jelly to the piston gasket. Use Volvo Genuine parts petroleum jelly (P/N 116 1151-4).
Install:
- the piston over the locating pin. Carefully press the piston down into the housing
- the spring on the piston
- the cover and the screws. Tighten the screws. Tighten to 12 Nm.
Installing the accumulator housing on the transmission
Install the oil pipes on the housing (start with the larger pipe).
Twist up the housing to the transmission. Install the screws. Finger tighten the screws. Adjust the oil pipe using the hose in the housing if any of the screws are stiff.
Tighten the screws. Tighten to 12 Nm.
Install the oil filter. See Transmission oil / oil filter, replacing Removal and Replacement. Alternatively: Replace the oil filter (see the mileage)
Check:
- the oil pipes
- that the screws are tightened
