Shifter A/T: Service and Repair









Replacement Of Gear Lever Knob
- Pull knob straight upward from lever Considerable force is required to remove knob.
- Install new knob.
- Ensure that plastic collar is in place and correctly positioned.





Removal Of Gear Selector Unit
- Disconnect control rod.
- Jack up car.
- Disconnect control rod from gear lever arm by removing clip.
- Disconnect battery ground lead.





- Remove soundproofing panels on each side.
- If gear selector unit is to be replaced, remove gear selector knob and plastic ring.
- Remove:
ashtray
center console screws in storage compartment and at front of panel
console panel screws
cover under parking brake lever





- Undo panel connector and remove panel from center console
- Expose panel connectors, open connector at left-hand side of center panel.
- Withdraw wiring.





- Move gear selector lever to position P and turn ignition key to position I or II.
- Remove cable adjuster snap ring at gear lever end.
- Lift rubber edge of gear lever unit panel and unhook cable from gear lever arm.
- Disconnect cable attachment from gear selector unit. Ensure that cable cannot become caught in gear selector unit.





- Remove gear selector unit and lever.
- Remove gear selector unit screws and lift out unit.

Transfer Of Components





- Remove gear selector unit from housing by removing spring clip, rubber grommet and gear lever arm. Tap out spindle.





- Transfer indicator panel.
- Remove panel by pressing in rear edge to release snap catch.





- Transfer light strip with indicator, cover and spacers.
- Cut off locking clips.





Installation

- Transfer spacers located behind light strip.
- Fit indicator and strip in gear selector unit. Install strip retaining clips.





- Install indicator panel.
- Exercise care when installing shift lock override button in unit.
- Transfer gear selector knob and plastic ring.














Installation Of Gear Selector Unit
- Install new gear selector unit in housing
- Install spindle, spring clip and rubber grommet.





- Install gear selector unit in car.
- Position wiring under center panel.
- Install unit. Tighten mounting screws to 8 Nm (6 ft lb).
- Install a new gear selector knob and plastic ring.

NOTE: Do not reuse old knob.





- Reconnect connector (illustration shows location on 1993 model).
- Clip wiring at same points as before (if applicable).
- Cars with key lock function:





- Connect cable to gear selector unit
- Move gear lever to position P.
- Install cable snap ring.





- Reconnect control rod to gear lever arm.
- Secure rod with washer and snap ring, ensuring that ring is seated in groove.





- Reinstall/Reconnect:
center console panel and console
wiring to center console switch
ashtray
soundproofing panels on each side
battery ground lead
- Check and, if necessary, adjust gear selector.
- Cars with key lock function:
check and, if necessary, adjust key lock function.
check shift lock override function.
