Fuel Tank and Attachments Overview

During all repair procedures on the fuel tank, be aware of the following:

• Route lines of all types (for example, fuel, hydraulic, Evaporative Emission (EVAP), coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum) and electrical wiring so that the original routing is followed.

• Make sure that the ground (-) strap between the fuel filler tube and body is securely fastened, to prevent electrostatic charging.

• Ensure sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.






1 Fuel Filler Tube

• With the connection for the ground strap to the body.

• Make sure it is secure.

• Tighten the bolts to the body to 9 Nm.

2 Vent Line

• From the fuel tank.

• To the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister.

3 Vent Line

• From the EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1.

• To the EVAP canister.

4 Fuel Pump Control Module (J538)

5 Fuel Tank

• Support the fuel tank using the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A).

• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Fuel Tank ] Fuel Tank.

• Drain the fuel tank using the fuel extracting device (VAS 5190). Refer to => [ Fuel Tank, Draining ] Fuel Tank, Draining.

6 Lock Ring

• 145 Nm

• Use the wrench (T10202) for removal and installation.

• Make sure it is secure.

7 Fuel Filter

• Flange installed position, refer to => [ Location of Flange on the Fuel Tank ].

• Always replace the flange seal.

• Replacing, refer to => [ Fuel Filter ] Service and Repair.

8 Heat Shield

9 Securing Strap

• Pay attention to the installed position.

• Make sure it is secure.

10 Bolt

• 33 Nm

11 Protective Cover

• For the bottom of the fuel tank.

12 Line Coupling

• To loosen, squeeze the button for the line coupling.

13 Fuel Delivery Unit

• Flange individual parts, right side => [ Individual Components of the Flange, Right Side ].

• Flange installed position, refer to => [ Location of Flange on the Fuel Tank ].

• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Fuel Delivery Unit and Fuel Level Sensor ] Fuel Delivery Unit and Fuel Level Sensor.

• Fuel pump, checking, refer to => [ Fuel Pump, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

- Install the flange in the direction of travel - arrow -.

The tab - 2 - must be between the tabs - 1 and 3 - on the fuel tank.
