Function test and servicing the optical and acoustic oil pressure indicator.

Conditions

Engine oil temperature at least 80 °C (176 °F) (radiator fan must start up once).

Selector lever must be in the "P" or "N" positions.

Oil Pressure Switch, Checking

Oil pressure, checking.

Procedure

- Remove the oil pressure switch (F1) and install it into the (V.A.G 1342).

- Install the (V.A.G 1342) with the (V.A.G 1342/14) into the oil filter bracket in place of the oil pressure switch.

Pay attention to the installed position of the (V.A.G 1342/14): the cone shaped connection on the adapter must be attached to the pressure hose on the (V.A.G 1342).

- Connect the brown wire from the (V.A.G 1342) to ground (-).

- Connect the (V.A.G 1527B) using adapter cables from (V.A.G 1594C) to the battery positive and the oil pressure switch. Light Emitting Diode (LED) must not light up.

If the LED lights up:

- Replace the oil pressure switch.

If the LED does not light up:

While starting the engine, watch the (V.A.G 1342) and LED as the switch point of the oil pressure switch may already be exceeded during start.

- Start the engine and run at idle speed.

LED must light up at 1.2 to 1.6 bar positive pressure, otherwise replace the oil pressure switch.

Oil Pressure, Checking

- Check the oil pressure at different speeds:

1500 RPM: minimum 1.7 bar

2000 RPM: 3.0 to 5.5 bar

above 2000 RPM: maximum 7.0 bar

- If the specified values are not reached:

- First check the control piston of the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump for contamination.

- To do so, first remove the plug from the cylinder block, then remove the plug from the oil pump.

The control piston for the oil pressure relief valve is spring loaded. Therefore the highest care is required when removing the plug.

The plug is tightened in the oil pump to 35 Nm.

- Pull the control piston out of the oil pump and remove any contamination as necessary.

- Check the strainer inside the oil intake pipe - item 17 -=> [ Oil Intake Pipe ] Oil Pan, Pump and Filter Housing Overview for clogging.

- Check the oil pipe - item 10 -=> [ Oil Pipe ] Oil Pan, Pump and Filter Housing Overview on the bottom of the cylinder block for leaks. Replace sealing rings - item 9 -=> [ Seal ] Oil Pan, Pump and Filter Housing Overview if necessary.

- Correct mechanical damage, for example, bearing damage.

At higher engine speeds oil pressure must not exceed 7.0 bar

If a malfunction is found despite insufficient oil pressure:

- Replace the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Oil Pump.

If the specification is exceeded:

- Check the oil passages.

- Replace the oil pump, if necessary. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Oil Pump.
