Water Pump: Service and Repair






Coolant Pump

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306)

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

- Remove the front bumper.

- Move the lock carrier into the service position. Procedures

- Set the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) for cylinder 1. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Checking ] Adjustments.

- Remove the vibration damper => [ (Item 4) Vibration Damper ] Description and Operation.

- Drain the coolant. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Draining and Filling.

- Disconnect the coolant hose - 3 - from the coolant pipe. Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 - and fold the coolant pipe forward.






- Remove the coolant drain plugs => [ (Item 2) Coolant Drain Plug ] Description and Operation.

- Remove the coolant pump cover => [ (Item 5) Coolant Pump Cover ] Description and Operation.

- Remove the coolant pump bolts - arrows - and remove the coolant pump.






If the coolant pump bolts are not accessibly, install the vibration damper and rotate the crankshaft using the counterhold tool Touareg V10 (T10172) and pins (T10172/1) until the bolts are accessible.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Coat the new O-ring with coolant, do not use any other lubricants.

- Install the coolant pump.

- Tighten the coolant pump bolts - arrows - to 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.






- Tighten the coolant pump cover bolts in the sequence shown to 8 Nm.






- Fill the coolant. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Draining and Filling.
