Camshaft Adjuster Valves






Camshaft Adjuster Valves

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (VAG 1783)

Torx bit assortment (VAG 1766)

Ratchet 1/4" (VAS 6234)

Socket wrench (T10072)

Sealant (D 176 501 A1)

Sealing compound (D 454 300 A2)

Removing

Requirements

Engine must be removed.

Before disconnecting harness connectors, mark allocation to component.

- On the following components, pull off the covers for the connectors:

Camshaft adjustment valve 1 (N205)

Camshaft adjustment valve 1 (exhaust) (N318)

Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor (G40)

CMP sensor 2 (G163)

- Free up the wiring harness.

- Remove vacuum pump, if present. Refer to --> [ Mechanical Vacuum Pump ] Mechanical Vacuum Pump.

- Remove the three cylinder head cover bolts - arrows -.





- Remove top and bottom coolant pipes on cover piece.

- Now remove timing chain cover bolts - arrows - from cylinder head.





Bolts - A - are not on vehicles with mechanical vacuum pump.

CAUTION!
Carefully cover lower chain compartment so no parts can fall in.

Do not completely remove camshaft adjustment valve bolts so that valve is not tilted when removed.

- Loosen camshaft adjustment valve bolts approximately 3 mm (5 turns) - arrows - using socket wrench (T10072).





- Pull camshaft adjustment valve out of seal seat in control housing against loosened bolts.

- Completely remove bolts and remove camshaft adjustment valve from control housing.

Installing

CAUTION!
The valve seat in the control housing must not be scored or scratched.

The camshaft adjustment valves and control housing must be free of dust and contamination.

The camshaft adjustment valves must not be subjected to knocks or impacts.

Only remove new camshaft adjustment valve from packaging right before installation.

Camshaft adjustment valves must not be pulled into valve seat by securing bolts. Only press them in by hand.

- Coat sealing ring with clean engine oil.

- Carefully insert camshaft adjustment valve into housing and press it perpendicular to valve axle in by hand until it stops.

- Tighten the bolts - arrows - to 3.8 Nm.





- Clean sealing surface on timing chain cover as well as on cylinder head.

- If seals in cover are to be replaced, refer to --> [ Camshaft Adjuster Valve Seal, Installing ] Service and Repair.

- Make sure the seal - arrows - fits correctly inside the cylinder head cover.





- If necessary, remove sealant residue in places - A -.

- Apply a thin bead of sealant (D 176 501 A1) to clean sealing surfaces on cover.

- Also apply some sealing compound (D 454 300 A2) to places marked on cover.





Sealant (D 176 501 A1) hardens quickly.

- - 1 - Slide cover at a slight angle onto camshaft adjustment valves. Ensure cylinder head cover seal is not pressed back.

- - 2 - Press cover up and under cylinder head cover seal. Then press cover against cylinder head and onto alignment pins.





- Make sure the cylinder head cover seal - arrows - is seated correctly. It must not be pushed back.





- First install all bolts - arrows - and tighten lightly.





Bolts - A - are not on vehicles with mechanical vacuum pump.

- Then tighten all bolts. Tightening specification, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Assembly Overview ] Cylinder Head Assembly Overview.

- Then tighten the three cylinder head cover bolts - arrows - to the tightening specification. Refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Assembly Overview ] Cylinder Head Assembly Overview.





- Install vacuum pump, if present. Refer to --> [ Mechanical Vacuum Pump ] Mechanical Vacuum Pump.

The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the disassembling sequence.
