Camshaft Adjuster Valves
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (VAG 1783)
• Torx bit assortment (VAG 1766)
• Ratchet 1/4" (VAS 6234)
• Socket wrench (T10072)
• Sealant (D 176 501 A1)
• Sealing compound (D 454 300 A2)
Removing
Requirements
• Engine must be removed.
• Before disconnecting harness connectors, mark allocation to component.
- On the following components, pull off the covers for the connectors:
• Camshaft adjustment valve 1 (N205)
• Camshaft adjustment valve 1 (exhaust) (N318)
• Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor (G40)
• CMP sensor 2 (G163)
- Free up the wiring harness.
- Remove vacuum pump, if present. Refer to --> [ Mechanical Vacuum Pump ] Mechanical Vacuum Pump.
- Remove the three cylinder head cover bolts - arrows -.
- Remove top and bottom coolant pipes on cover piece.
- Now remove timing chain cover bolts - arrows - from cylinder head.
• Bolts - A - are not on vehicles with mechanical vacuum pump.
CAUTION!
• Carefully cover lower chain compartment so no parts can fall in.
• Do not completely remove camshaft adjustment valve bolts so that valve is not tilted when removed.
- Loosen camshaft adjustment valve bolts approximately 3 mm (5 turns) - arrows - using socket wrench (T10072).
- Pull camshaft adjustment valve out of seal seat in control housing against loosened bolts.
- Completely remove bolts and remove camshaft adjustment valve from control housing.
Installing
CAUTION!
• The valve seat in the control housing must not be scored or scratched.
• The camshaft adjustment valves and control housing must be free of dust and contamination.
• The camshaft adjustment valves must not be subjected to knocks or impacts.
• Only remove new camshaft adjustment valve from packaging right before installation.
• Camshaft adjustment valves must not be pulled into valve seat by securing bolts. Only press them in by hand.
- Coat sealing ring with clean engine oil.
- Carefully insert camshaft adjustment valve into housing and press it perpendicular to valve axle in by hand until it stops.
- Tighten the bolts - arrows - to 3.8 Nm.
- Clean sealing surface on timing chain cover as well as on cylinder head.
- If seals in cover are to be replaced, refer to --> [ Camshaft Adjuster Valve Seal, Installing ] Service and Repair.
- Make sure the seal - arrows - fits correctly inside the cylinder head cover.
- If necessary, remove sealant residue in places - A -.
- Apply a thin bead of sealant (D 176 501 A1) to clean sealing surfaces on cover.
- Also apply some sealing compound (D 454 300 A2) to places marked on cover.
• Sealant (D 176 501 A1) hardens quickly.
- - 1 - Slide cover at a slight angle onto camshaft adjustment valves. Ensure cylinder head cover seal is not pressed back.
- - 2 - Press cover up and under cylinder head cover seal. Then press cover against cylinder head and onto alignment pins.
- Make sure the cylinder head cover seal - arrows - is seated correctly. It must not be pushed back.
- First install all bolts - arrows - and tighten lightly.
• Bolts - A - are not on vehicles with mechanical vacuum pump.
- Then tighten all bolts. Tightening specification, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Assembly Overview ] Cylinder Head Assembly Overview.
- Then tighten the three cylinder head cover bolts - arrows - to the tightening specification. Refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Assembly Overview ] Cylinder Head Assembly Overview.
- Install vacuum pump, if present. Refer to --> [ Mechanical Vacuum Pump ] Mechanical Vacuum Pump.
The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the disassembling sequence.
