The marking - arrow - on the bottom side of the rear final drive identifies which final drive is installed.

Short Description

- Before removal, print out a diagnostic protocol. Send back the removed rear final drive with the protocol in the usual manner.

Before raising the vehicle, two holes must be made in the luggage compartment floor. The locations where you must make the holes are marked by the factory. Through these holes, you will have access to the rear final drive/subframe bolts located below. Drive axles are removed from the rear final drive. Electrical connections and ventilation lines are disconnected from the rear final drive.

Rear part of exhaust system and driveshaft rear flexible disc are removed. Driveshaft is not removed.

Rear final drive is lowered with transmission jack downward diagonally in direction of travel.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)

Engine and transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with universal transmission adapter (V.A.G 1359/2)

Pressure sleeve (T10071/3) from assembly fixture (T10071)

Electric drill motor

Stepped or cone drill bit

Protective glasses

Removing

- Raise floor covering in luggage compartment.

- Remove trim - A -.

Now you have access to the markings - arrows - on the luggage compartment floor.





- Drill 2 holes at the markings - arrows - to dimension - a - = 26 mm diameter. Remove metal shavings while drilling, if possible.





- Deburr holes and remove shavings carefully.

Recreate corrosion protection with material specified by manufacturer.

- Loosen and remove both bolts - arrow -.





You must replace these bolts later.

- Raise the vehicle.

- Remove the driveshaft flexible disc to rear final drive bolts.

- Remove the drive axles from the rear final drive.

- Remove crossmember bolts - arrows - and crossmember from subframe.





- Place a suitable wood block - A - on universal transmission adapter (V.A.G 1359/2) and support rear final drive with the engine and transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A).





- Remove the rear final drive bolts - B - from below.

You must replace these bolts later.

Rear final drive is now loose.

- Secure rear final drive against falling down with a universal support strap- 1 -.





- Remove drives axles and secure to vehicle. Slide rear final drive to the left and right to do this.

- Lower rear final drive slightly and pull forward.

- First push connector - A - against the all wheel drive control module in order to release, then disconnect.





- Remove ventilation lines - arrows - from the rear final drive.

- To remove, lower the rear final drive more and pull forward, ensuring there is sufficient clearance to other components.

Installing

Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:

- Secure rear final drive against falling down with universal support strap - B -.





- Install rear final drive, ensuring there is enough clearance to other components.

- Install connector - A -, slide ventilation lines - arrows - onto ventilation pipes.





- Raise the rear final drive into position.

- Position drive axles to the rear final drive by sliding the rear final drive to the left and right.





- Install the rear final drive bolts - B - from below, do not tighten bolts yet.

- Insert two new bolts - arrow - through the holes in the luggage compartment floor and tighten.





- Seal holes. To do this, use the caps (N 908 572 01).





- Install trim and floor covering.

- Raise the vehicle.

- Tighten the rear final drive bolts - arrow - from below.





- Install crossmember.

- Tighten drive axles.

- Install the driveshaft flexible disc to rear final drive bolts => [ Rear Flexible Disc ] Service and Repair.

- Tighten pendulum support with new bolts.





- Install exhaust system.

- Install noise insulation.

If rear final drive is replaced:

- Check oil level in the Haldex clutch, top off if necessary. Refer to => [ Generation II Haldex Clutch Oil Level, Checking and Filling ] Generation II Haldex Clutch Oil Level, Checking and Filling.

- Check the final drive oil level, fill if necessary. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive Oil Level, Checking and Filling ] Rear Final Drive (09M,09MA Transmission).
