Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair






Crankshaft Seal, Vibration Damper Side

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pressure piece (T40007)

Torque wrench (150 to 800 Nm) (V.A.G 1601)

Removing

- Remove noise insulation pan.

- Remove toothed belt --> [ Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning ] Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning.

- Remove centered bolt - 2 - of toothed belt crankshaft sprocket - 1 - and remove sprocket from end of crankshaft.

- Then, pull out seal using pulling hook (T20143/1).

- Remove thrust collar from end of crankshaft and mark thrust collar on its face surface - arrow - using a waterproof felt pen.





Installing

- Before installing, remove oil remains from end of crankshaft and thrust collar with a clean cloth.

- Press in new seal up to stop using pressure piece (T40007).





- Turn thrust collar and press it onto end of crankshaft so that the marked surface faces the engine.

- Install toothed belt crankshaft sprocket, using a new centered bolt. Torque specification: 200 Nm plus an additional 1/2 (180°) additional turn.

- Install toothed belt. --> [ Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning ] Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning

- Install ribbed belt --> [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.

- Install noise insulation pan.
