Transmission Oil, Changing and Checking Oil Level

Transmission Oil, Changing and Checking Oil Level

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051) or Vehicle Diagnosis & Service Syst. (VAS 5052)

Drip Tray For VAS6100 (VAS 6208)

Adapter For Oil Filling (VAS 6262)

Protective glasses

Protective gloves

- Raise vehicle.

- Remove center and left sections of noise insulation below engine/transmission.

- Remove protective plate - A - at bottom on transmission - arrows -.

- Place appropriate receptacle underneath transmission.

CAUTION!
Wear protective glasses.

Wear protective gloves.

- Remove inspection plug near pendulum support - arrow -.

A "black plastic overflow tube" is located in this hole (with 8 mm hex socket head, torque specification: 3 Nm). Its length determines oil level in the transmission.

- Remove this oil tube.

About 5 liters of oil will drain.

- Reinstall overflow tube, 3 Nm.

- Install adapter - A - of (VAS 6262) into opening for inspection plug hand-tight.

CAUTION!
Filler hose and adapter (VAS 6262 ) must be clean and transmission oil must not be mixed with other oils!

- Shake oil cans before opening.

- Fill 5.5 liters transmission oil for direct shift transmission via the adapter (VAS 6262 ).

To change bottles, shut-off valve can be closed or Adapter For Oil Filling (VAS 6262) can be held higher than the transmission.

- Read off transmission oil temperature indicated in display field of (VAS 5051) or (VAS 5052).

- Start engine.

- Press brake and select every selector lever position for approx. 3 seconds. Place selector lever back in position "P".

Do not switch off engine!

CAUTION!
When working in vicinity of cooler, always ensure clearance to fan - danger of injury!

Fan can only switch on by itself.

At a transmission oil temperature of 35°C to 45°C:

- With engine running, disconnect quick-acting coupling of Adapter For Oil Filling (VAS 6262).

- Let excess oil drain.

Every 30 seconds a slight oil splashing comes from the overflow tube independent of height of transmission oil level (cause: cooling oil impulse to coupling). The splashing is not a criterion for sufficient transmission oil level and this must therefore be considered when judging the transmission oil level.

Transmission oil flowing out must not be refilled or reused. Dispose of oil in an appropriate manner => [ Transmission Oil and Filter ] Transmission Oil and Filter.

- As soon as oil flows out (it begins to drip), remove Adapter For Oil Filling (VAS 6262) and install bolt with new seal - arrow -.

Tightening torque: 45 Nm

- Turn engine off.

This concludes the transmission oil and filter change.

Oil level in transmission is correctly adjusted.

- Install center and left sections of noise insulation below engine/transmission.
