Tandem Pump

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Hand vacuum pump (V.A.G 1390)

Hand vacuum pump reservoir (V.A.G 1390/1 )

Hose clamp pliers (V.A.G 1921) or Pliers for spring clamps (VAS 5024A)

Removing

Observe safety precautions => [ Safety Precautions ] Fuel Supply.

Observe rules for cleanliness => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Fuel Supply.

CAUTION!
The fuel or fuel lines in fuel system can become very hot (danger of scalding)!

In addition, the fuel system is under pressure! Before opening the system, place cloths around the connection area and release pressure by carefully loosening the connection!

Wear protective goggles and protective gloves when working on the fuel system!

- Pull off the supply hose - 1 - (white marking) and the return hose - 2 - (blue marking) from the fuel lines on the cylinder head.





- Connect the hand vacuum pump (V.A.G 1390 ) with the breather reservoir (V.A.G 1390/1) to the return line - 3 -.

- Operate the hand vacuum pump, until no more fuel runs from the return hose. Make sure that no fuel is sucked into the hand vacuum pump.

- Disconnect vacuum line - 1 - from brake booster of tandem pump - 4 -.





- Pull off the supply hose - 2 - (white marking) from the tandem pump - 4 -.

- Remove mounting bolts - arrows -.

- Remove tandem pump - 4 - from cylinder head.

- Pull the tandem pump - 4 - slightly upward, pull off the return hose - 3 - (blue marking) and remove the tandem pump - 4 -.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal, noting the following:

Make sure that tandem pump coupling has proper seating in camshaft.

Tandem pump seals must always be replaced.

- Connect the return hose - 3 - (blue marking) to the return connection on the tandem pump.





- Install the tandem pump and tighten the upper bolts to 20 Nm.

- Tighten lower bolts to 10 Nm.

- Connect the supply hose - 2 - (white marking) to supply connection and the vacuum line - 1 - from the brake booster to the tandem pump - 4 -.

- Connect the supply hose - 1 - (white marking) to the fuel line on the cylinder head.





- Connect the hand vacuum pump (V.A.G 1390 ) with the breather reservoir (V.A.G 1390/1) to the return line - 3 -.

- Operate the hand vacuum pump until fuel starts to escape from the return line - 3 -. Make sure that no fuel is sucked into the hand vacuum pump.

- Connect the return hose - 2 - (blue marking) to the return line - 3 -.
