Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Measuring bar (VW 382/7)

Magnetic plate 50 mm diameter (VW 385/17)

Gauge (commercially available)

Test Sequence

When installing new pistons or working with a partial motor, all of the pistons must be checked for piston position at TDC.





In order to measure the piston position in TDC, turn the engine clockwise.

Depending on the piston projection, install the corresponding cylinder head gasket according to the following table.





Cylinder Head Seal Identification





Replacement part No. = - arrow 1 -

Control code = - arrow 2 - (ignore this!)

Holes = - arrow 3 -

If varying values occur when measuring the projection, use the gasket for the largest value.
