Valve Stem Seals, Replacing

NOTE: With cylinder head installed.

Special Tools Needed:
Fixture 2036 �
Puller 3047A
Press tool 3129
Lever VW 541/1A with press tool VW 541/5
Air hose VW 653/3

- Remove camshafts.

- Remove valve lifters (do not mix them up) and store with contact surfaces down.

- Remove spark plugs.

- Set piston of applicable cylinder to "bottom dead center".





- Install fixture 2036 and adjust mountings to height of studs.

- Install air hose VW 653/3 in spark plug hole and apply continued pressure of at least 6 bar (87 psi).

- Remove valve springs using lever VW 541/1A and press tool VW 541/5.

NOTE: Tight valve keepers can be loosened by tapping lightly on the lever.

- Pull off valve stem seals using 3047A.





- To prevent damage to the new valve stem seals, place plastic sleeve -A- on valve stem.

- Lubricate valve stem seal with oil, place it into tool 3129 and push carefully onto vale guide.
