DTC 2342 [California (Digifant II)]

CALIFORNIA VEHICLES PRODUCED PRIOR TO JAN. 1989 ONLY

1. Check the idle speed and CO level. If they are both within specification the problem is intermittent. If they are not within specifications continue.
2. Check and repair possible vacuum leaks at the intake system (injector seals, intake boot, etc.) .
3. With the ignition "OFF", disconnect the Digifant II control unit harness connector. The Digifant II control unit is located beneath the drip tray, at the left rear (drivers side) of the engine compartment.
4. Connect a suitable volt/ohm meter between terminal 2 and 13 of the Digifant II control unit harness connector.

Special Tools:

CAUTION: Avoid damaging the delicate connectors within the control unit harness connector. A simple set of test leads can be fabricated using flat connectors (part # VW N 17 457 2) or equivalent, and a pair of alligator clips.

5. Disconnect the green wire at the oxygen sensor connector and connect it to ground (refer to CHASSIS ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS). Set the volt/ohm meter to ohms.

^ The correct measurement should be 0 ohms (continuity).

6. Remove the ground at the green wire.

^ The correct measurement should be infinite ohms (no continuity).

If the correct measurement is not obtained, repair or replace the harness as necessary. Refer to CHASSIS ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS.
If the correct measurement is obtained, refer to COMPONENT TESTING for checking the oxygen sensor.
