Torque Converter: Testing and Inspection

U660E AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE: TORQUE CONVERTER AND DRIVE PLATE: INSPECTION

1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the one-way clutch.

(1) Press on the spline of the stator with a finger and rotate it. Check that it rotates freely when turned clockwise and locks heavily when turned counterclockwise.

Text in Illustration

If necessary, clean the torque converter assembly and recheck the one-way clutch.

Replace the torque converter assembly if the one-way clutch still fails the inspection.

(b) Determine the condition of the torque converter assembly.

Text in Illustration

(1) If the inspection result of the torque converter assembly satisfies the following conditions, replace the torque converter assembly.

Malfunction

* A metallic sound is emitted from the torque converter assembly during the stall test or when the shift lever is moved to N.

* The one-way clutch is free or locked in both directions.

* The amount of powder in the ATF is greater than the sample shown in the illustration (See the sample).

HINT
The sample illustration shows approximately 0.025 liters (0.026 US qts, 0.022 Imp. qts) of the ATF that is taken out from a removed torque converter assembly.

(c) Replace the ATF in the torque converter assembly.

(1) If the ATF is discolored and/or has foul odor, stir the ATF in the torque converter assembly and drain it.

(d) Clean and check the oil cooler and oil pipe line.

(1) If the torque converter assembly is inspected or the ATF is changed, clean the oil cooler and oil pipe line.

HINT
* Spray compressed air of 196 kPa (2 kgf/cm2, 28 psi) from the inlet hose.
* If excessive fine powder is found in the ATF, add new ATF using a bucket pump and clean it again.

(2) If the ATF is cloudy, inspect the oil cooler (radiator).

(e) Prevent deformation of the torque converter assembly and damage to the oil pump gear.

Text in Illustration

(1) When any marks due to interference are found on the end of the bolt for the torque converter assembly or on the bottom of the bolt hole, replace the bolt and the torque converter assembly.

(2) All of the bolts must be the same length.

(3) Washers must be used with the bolts.

2. INSPECT DRIVE PLATE

(a) Check the drive plate for damage.

(b) Set up a dial indicator and measure the runout of the 6 portions around the torque converter assembly fitting surfaces.

Maximum runout:

0.30 mm (0.0118 in.)

Text in Illustration

If the runout is not within the specification or the drive plate is damaged, replace the drive plate.
