Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Connecting Tachometer:

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect tachometer test probe to the check connector.

NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.

Installing Jumper Wire On Check Connector Terminals:

3. Using a jumper wire, connect the T and E1 terminals of the check connector.
4. Check the idle speed.

Idle Speed:

M/T: 750 ± 50 rpm
A/T: 800 ± 50 rpm

NOTE: Check the idle speed and the ignition timing with the electric cooling fan OFF and the transmission in Neutral.

5. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing and compare with specification.

Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle.

6. If necessary, loosen the distributor hold down bolt and turn the distributor to align the marks. When finished adjusting, torque distributor hold down bolt to 13 ft.lbs (17 Nm).
7. Remove the jumper wire from the check connector.
8. Check the idle advance ignition timing.

Ignition Timing: 7 - 17° BTDC at idle.
9. Disconnect tachometer and timing light.
