Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove exhaust system (105) from flange connection
2. Remove exhaust shield (105c)
3. Remove propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a)
4. Remove propeller shaft (106) at rear axle center assembly backwards
5. Push rear propeller shaft forwards out of centering device on drive pinion and remove backwards
- Pay attention to existing marking
6. Remove cover of fuel pump assemble (140)

WARNING:
^ Risk of accident when raising a rear axle half
^ Vehicle must not lift off hoist contact surface

7. Remove rear axle shafts (37) at connecting flange surface
- Discard self-locking bolts with internal secretions or hexagon socket bolts and washers for axle to flange connection
8. Move rear axle shaft into approximately the horizontal position and slide together.
- Tie rear axle shaft securely at rear axle carrier
9. Measure and note friction torque as follows:

- Assemble torquemeter tool No. 001 589 49 21 00 with adapter tool No. 100 589 02 59 00 and socket tool No. 126 589 02 09 00, or equivalent.
- Install assembly to pinion shaft twelve point nut
- Measure total friction (turning) torque, then record figure for later assembly procedures
10. Holding flange with pin wrench tool No. 129 589 01 07 00, or equivalent, loosen unscrew twelve-point collared nut or hexagon collared nut (40) using socket tool No. 126 589 02 09 00, or equivalent
- To loosen, do not unlock crimped collar locking device of twelve-point collared nut or hexagon collared nut
- Discard twelve-point collared nut or hexagon collared nut
11. Pull off joint flange (41) use puller tool No. 129 589 01 33 00, or equivalent, if necessary
12. Using a suitable tool, press out radial seal ring (42)
- When pressing out ensure that no retaining lug (if fitted) of the loose thrust washer on the tapered roller bearing
- If necessary, replace and remove lug on rear axle center assembly

INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse order, noting the following information:
- Coat sealing lip of new sealing ring with suitable Hypoid or universal transmission fluid, then using assembly mandrel tool No. 124 589 02 15 00, or equivalent, replace radial seal ring
- Replace self-locking bolts and nuts
- Inspect sealing surface of drive flange, replace if excessively worn, then install flange
- Install a new twelve-point collared nut or hexagon collared nut and tighten in stages until the friction (turning) torque measured previously is reached.
- Observe minimum tightening torque of greater than 180 Nm
- If minimum tightening torque is not achieved before friction (turning) torque previously noted is reached, replace resilient spacer sleeve, refer to disassembling and assembling rear axle center assembly, adjusting gear set. Removal and Replacement

- Secure twelve-point collared nut or hexagon collared nut using a suitable shop made staking tool
- Replace self-locking bolts with internal secretions or hexagon socket bolts and washers for axle to flange connection
- Lightly lubricate thread on bolts and bolt head support
- Check rear axle oil level
- Tighten the following as noted:
- Self-locking bolt of rear axle shaft on connecting flange: 70 Nm
- Twelve point collard nut of joint flange on drive pinion: greater than: 180 Nm
- Rear axle center assembly breather: 25 Nm
- Fill rear axle center assembly: 1.1 liters total quantity
