Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair
NOTE: The radial sealing ring is a so-called combination ring with all-around shoulder and contoured outer ring.
The ring consists of two different materials.
Inside: Viton (green)
Outside: Acryl (black)
This radial sealing ring requires no chrome-plated spacing ring.
When renewing radial sealing ring, coat sealing lip (1) only with engine oil prior to installation.
The previous instruction to fill 1 g or 1 cc longterm lubricating grease between dust and sealing lip is no longer valid.
NOTE: Grease prevents the beveled webs of sealing lip from returning the oil (away from actual sealing point).
Radial sealing rings made by Freudenberg were installed from November 1983 to March 1984. These rings are made of Viton and are colored brown. On outer circumference the front half is also coated with Viton, while the rear half is made of steel plate to facilitate assembly.
This radial sealing ring is also supplied as a spare part, part No. 011 997 22 47.
Installation: November 1983 - March 1984
Removal
1 Remove cooler (radiator) and fan.
2 Remove pulley (19), vibration damper (20) and balancing disc (24). Service and Repair
3 Push out radial sealing ring by means of a screwdriver. Make sure that crankshaft journal and mounting bore are not damaged.
4 Unscrew cover and remove.
5 Thoroughly clean sealing surfaces on cover and on oil pan upper half.
6 Pull off spacing ring with puller, if noticeably worn.
Installation
7 Install new spacing ring.
8 Slip sleeve for centering cover onto crankpin.
Attention! If, besides the cover, the complete oil pan is also removed, install oil pan again first. For this purpose, also place sleeve on crankpin.
9 Seal cover with sealing compound, part number 001 989 29 20 (silicon caoutchouc) in relation to crankcase and oil pan (arrows). Provide screws M 8 x 30 also with sealing compound.
10 Position cover and screw down.
Attention! Tighten screws in oil pan first (arrows).
11 Remove sleeve. If the sleeve cannot be removed, insert a mandrel into cross bore and unscrew.
12 Coat new radial sealing ring on sealing lip and in range of dust sealing lip with engine oil and insert with insertion tool.
Attention! The radial sealing ring should be accurately square in relation to crankshaft journal, since otherwise no perfect sealing will be obtained.
13 Install balancing disc, vibration damper and pulley.
14 Install fan and cooler (radiator).
