Fluid - A/T: Testing and Inspection

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) INSPECTION [FS5A-EL]

ATF Condition Inspection

1. Pull out the dipstick.

2. Verify that the ATF color is a clear, red color.

- If the ATF color is not a clear, red color, verify the malfunction symptom from the following table:

ATF Level Inspection

CAUTION:
- If the ATF level is not within the specification, do not drive the vehicle. Otherwise, the transaxle could be damaged.
- If ATF is not adhering to the dipstick after warming up the engine, do not drive the vehicle. The transaxle could be damaged because the ATF level is low.
- Do not perform the final inspection for the ATF level without driving the vehicle, or when the ATF temperature is not within 60-70 °C {140-158 °F}. If the inspection for the ATF level is mistakenly performed, the transaxle could be damaged.
- If ATF is added to the upper limit or more, ATF could leak from the breather.

NOTE:
- The dipstick of the FS5A-EL type measures the ATF level on the differential side. Therefore, ATF may adhere to the end of the dipstick if the ATF temperature on the differential side does not rise (before driving), even if there is an appropriate amount of ATF after warming up the engine.

1. Inspect the ATF level before driving the vehicle.
a. Park the vehicle on level ground, apply the parking brake firmly, and set the wheel blocks.

b. Visually verify that there is no ATF leakage from the oil hose or case.

c. Start the engine and warm it up in the P position.

CAUTION:
- If the ATF level is extremely low while the engine is warming up, do not perform the select operation. Otherwise, the transaxle could be damaged.

d. Drain the dipstick and wipe ATF off using a nylon cloth while leaving the engine idling.

e. Insert the dipstick and pull it out again.

f. Verify that ATF adheres to the end of the dipstick.

- If ATF does not adhere to the end of the dipstick, add ATF.

2. Inspect the ATF level after driving the vehicle.
a. With the brake pedal depressed, shift the selector lever from the P to D position at intervals of several seconds, and then shift to the P position again.

b. Drive 5 km {4 mile} or more in a city.

c. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.

d. Verify that the ATF temperature is 60-70 °C {140-158 °F} using the M-MDS.

e. Drain the dipstick and wipe ATF off using a nylon cloth while leaving the engine idling.

f. Insert the dipstick and pull it out again.

g. Verify that ATF is within the warm range on the dipstick.

- If ATF is not within the warm range, adjust the ATF level.
