Oil Pan: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.2. Drain the engine oil.
3. Remove the splash shield (RH).
4. Remove the transverse member.
5. Remove the front pipe and three way catalytic converter.
6. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
7. Install in the reverse order of removal.
8. Fill with the specified amount and type of engine oil.
9. Start the engine and inspect for oil leaks.
10. Turn off the engine and inspect for the oil level.
OIL PAN REMOVAL NOTE
CAUTION:
^ Pry tools can easily scratch the oil pan mounting surfaces. Prying off the oil pan can also easily bend the oil pan flange. Refer to the following instructions before removing the oil pan.
1.5 Liter
^ Insert a screwdriver or a separator tool between the VRAS and the oil pan.
1.8 Liter
^ Insert a screwdriver only at the points shown in the figure.
STIFFENER REMOVAL NOTE

^ Insert a screwdriver or a separator tool between the stiffener and the cylinder block.
STIFFENER INSTALLATION NOTE

1. Remove all foreign material from the contact surfaces of the cylinder block and the stiffener.
CAUTION:
^ Silicone sealant hardens and causes oil leakage when it is left for an extended period. Therefore, install parts before sealant hardens.
2. Apply silicone sealant to the shaded areas of the cylinder block as shown.
3. Apply silicone sealant to the stiffener along the inside of the bolt holes.
Thickness:
2.5 - 3.5 mm (0.099 - 0.137 inch)
4. Install the stiffener.
OIL PAN INSTALLATION NOTE
CAUTION:
^ If the bolts are reused, remove the old sealant from the bolt threads. Tightening a bolt that has old sealant on it can cause thread damage.
1. Apply silicone sealant to the contact surfaces of new oil pan gaskets as shown.

2. Install the new gaskets onto the oil pump body and the rear cover with the projections in the notches as shown.

CAUTION:
^ Silicone sealant hardens and causes oil leakage when it is left for an extended period. Therefore, install parts before sealant hardens.
3. Apply silicone sealant onto the area of oil pan gasket indicated A and B. (1.8 Liter)
Thickness:
2.0 mm (0.079 inch)
4. Apply silicone sealant to the oil pan along the inside of the bolt holes and overlap the ends.
Thickness:
2.0 - 3.0 mm (0.079 - 0.118 inch) (1.5 Liter)
2.5 - 3.5 mm (0.099 - 0.137 inch) (1.8 Liter)
