Engine Removal
Special Tools Required
- Universal Lifting Eyelet 07AAK-SNAA120
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- 2006 Civic Engine Hanger VSB02C000025
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
*Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damaging the wirering and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring, hoses, or interfere with other parts.
1. Open the hood, and secure it with hood support rod (A) in the wide-open position (B).
2. Relieve the fuel pressure, '07-11 models Service and Repair.
3. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.
4. Remove the cowl cover and the under-cowl panel Service and Repair.
5. Turn the IMA battery module switch OFF.
6. Remove the engine cover.
7. Remove the resonator Service and Repair.
8. Remove the intake air duct.
9. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair.
10. Disconnect the positive starter cable (A), then remove the harness clamp (B) and the ground cable (C).
11. Remove the PCM cover (A), then remove the bolts (B).
12. Disconnect the PCM connectors (A).
13. Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors (A), then remove the harness clamp (B) on the left side of the engine compartment.
14. Disconnect the vacuum hose.
15. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve connector (A), then remove the harness clamp (B).
16. Remove the purge joint from the bracket (C), the fuel pipe nut (D), and the EVAP canister purge valve bracket bolts (E).
17. Remove the drive belt Service and Repair.
18. Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap.
19. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
20. Remove the front wheels.
21. Remove the front undercover (A) and the splash shield (B).
22. Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant Service and Repair.
23. Drain the CVTF. CVT Fluid Replacement
24. Drain the engine oil Service and Repair.
25. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
26. Remove the radiator Service and Repair.
27. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A), then remove the A/C compressor without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively.
28. Remove the steering wheel Steering Wheel Removal.
29. Remove the steering joint cover (A).
30. Make reference marks (A) across the steering joint (B) and the steering gearbox pinion shaft (C). Remove the steering joint bolt (D), then disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft.
NOTE: Hold the lower slide shaft on the column with a piece of wire between the joint yoke of the lower slide shaft and the joint yoke of the upper shaft to prevent the slider shaft from pulling out.
31. Remove the center guide (A) (if equipped), and discard it. The center guide is for factory assembly use only.
32. Remove the IMA motor power cable clamps (A), then remove the bolt (B).
33. Disconnect the water bypass hose (A) and the heater hoses (B).
34. Disconnect the IMA motor power cable connector High Voltage Safety.
NOTE: If the motor power cable terminals are wet, dry them with a clean towel. Do not use compressed air.
35. Remove the shift cable. Do not bend the shift cable excessively Service and Repair.
36. Disconnect the solenoid harness connector (A) and the CVT input shaft (drive pulley) speed sensor connector (B), then remove the clamp (C).
37. Remove the IMA motor power cable mounting bolts (D).
38. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
39. Remove the under-floor TWC.
40. Disconnect the front stabilizer link Front Stabilizer Link Removal/Installation.
41. Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints. Front Lower Ball Joint Replacement
42. Remove the driveshafts Driveshaft Removal. Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
43. Disconnect the EPS motor 2P connector (A), the EPS motor 1P connector (B), the torque sensor 4P connector (C), and the EPS motor angle sensor 6P connector (D) from passenger's side of the steering gearbox. Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid contamination from grease or water.
44. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
45. Attach the universal lifting eyelet (07AAK-SNAA120) to the threaded hole (A) on the cylinder head with a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (B).
46. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the 2006 civic engine hanger (VSB02C000025) as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the universal lifting eyelet. Tighten the wing nut (A) by hand, and lift and support the engine/IMA motor/transmission.
NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield.
47. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
48. Remove the lower torque rod mounting bolts.
49. Make the appropriate reference lines (A) at the both sides of the front subframe (B) that line up with the edges (C) on the body.
50. Loosen the mid stiffener mounting bolt (A) on both sides.
51. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).
52. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then carefully attach them with four bolts.
53. Remove the front subframe mounting bolts (A), then lower the front subframe (B).
54. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
55. Attach the universal lifting eyelet to the threaded hole (A) on the cylinder head with an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (B).
56. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the universal lifting eyelet (B), and the transmission hanger (C), then lift the engine/IMA motor/transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist, and remove the engine support hanger, the 2006 civic engine hanger, and the universal lifting eyelet.
57. Remove the transmission mount bracket support bolt and nuts.
58. Remove the ground cable (A), then remove the side engine mount bracket (B).
59. Check that the engine/IMA motor/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.
60. Slowly lower the engine/IMA motor/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/IMA motor/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.
61. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/IMA motor/transmission.
62. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/IMA motor/transmission from under the vehicle.
