VTEC Rocker Arm Test

VTEC Rocker Arm Test

Special Tools Required

- Air Pressure Regulator 07AAJ-PNAA101
- VTEC Air Adapter 07VAJ-P8A010A

1. Remove the eight ignition coils and the eight spark plugs Service and Repair.

2. Remove the cylinder head cover Cylinder Head Cover Removal.

3. Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise. Make sure that the intake 1st rocker arm (A) and the intake 2nd rocker arm (B) are mechanically connected by the piston and that the intake 1st rocker arm and the intake 2nd rocker arm should move together, then make sure that the intake 1st rocker arm and the intake 3rd rocker arm (C) are separated and that the intake 1st rocker arm and the intake 3rd rocker arm should moves independently:

- If the intake 2nd rocker arm moves together and the intake 3rd rocker arm moves independently, go to step 4.
- If the intake 2nd rocker arm moves independently, remove and disassemble the rocker arm assembly, and check that the rocker arm pistons between the intake 1st and 2nd rocker arms move smoothly. If any rocker arm or rocker arm piston needs replacing, replace the rocker arms for the cylinder as an assembly, then retest.
- If the intake 3rd rocker arm moves together, remove and disassemble the rocker arm assembly, and check that the rocker arm pistons between the intake 2nd and 3rd rocker arms move smoothly. If any rocker arm or rocker arm piston needs replacing, replace the rocker arms for the cylinder as an assembly, then retest.

4. Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise. Make sure that the exhaust 1st rocker arm (A) and the exhaust 2nd rocker arm (B) are mechanically connected by the piston and that the exhaust 1st rocker arm and the exhaust 2nd rocker arm should move together.

- If the exhaust 2nd rocker arm moves together, go to step 5.
- If the exhaust 2nd rocker arm moves independently, remove and disassemble the rocker arm assembly, and check that the rocker arm pistons between the exhaust 1st and 2nd rocker arms move smoothly. If any rocker arm or rocker arm piston needs replacing, replace the rocker arms for the cylinder as an assembly, then retest.

5. Check that the air pressure on the shop air compressor gauge indicates over 400 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi).

6. Inspect the valve clearance Adjustments.

7. Install the VTEC air adapter (A) to the cam chain side inspection hole, then connect the air pressure regulator (B).

8. Loosen the valve on the air pressure regulator, and apply the specified air pressure.

9. Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise. The intake 1st rocker arm should move together of the intake 3rd rocker arm (B)

- If the intake 3rd rocker arm moves together, go to step 10.
- If the intake 3rd rocker arm moves independently, remove and disassemble the rocker arm assembly, and check that the rocker arm pistons between the intake 1st and 3rd rocker arms move smoothly. If any rocker arm or rocker arm piston needs replacing, replace the rocker arms for the cylinder as an assembly, then retest.

10. Tighten the valve on the air pressure regulator, then remove the VTEC air adapter.

11. Install the VTEC air adapter (A) to the transmission side inspection hole, then connect the air pressure regulator (B).

12. Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise. Make sure that the intake 2nd rocker arm (A) should move independently to the 3rd rocker arm (B) and the intake 1st rocker arm (C).

- If the intake 2nd and 3rd rocker arms move independently, go to step 13.
- If the intake 2nd or intake 3rd rocker arm moves together, remove and disassemble the rocker arm assembly, and check that the rocker arm pistons between the intake 1st and 2nd rocker arms move or intake 1st and 3rd smoothly. If any rocker arm or rocker arm piston needs replacing, replace the rocker arms for the cylinder as an assembly, then retest.

13. Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise. Make sure that the exhaust 2nd rocker arm (A) should move independently of the exhaust 1st rocker arm (B).

- If the exhaust 2nd rocker arm moves independently, go to step 14.
- If the exhaust 2nd rocker arm moves together, remove and disassemble the rocker arm assembly, and check that the rocker arm pistons between the exhaust 1st and 2nd rocker arms move smoothly. If any rocker arm or rocker arm piston needs replacing, replace the rocker arms for the cylinder as an assembly, then retest.

14. Tighten the valve on the air pressure regulator, then remove the VTEC air adapter.

15. Repeat step 3 to 14 on the remaining cylinders rocker arms with each piston at TDC. When all the rocker arms pass the test, go to step 16.

16. Install the cylinder head cover Cylinder Head Cover Installation.
