Shift Cable: Service and Repair

A/T Shift Cable Replacement

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, 2-door SRS Component Location Index (2-Door), 4-door SRS Component Location Index (4-Door) and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repair or service.

1. Remove the center console Center Console Removal/Installation

2. Move the shift lever to R.

3. Remove the nut securing the shift cable end.






4. Unlock the retainer lock (A).






5. Rotate the socket holder retainer (A) counterclockwise (B) until it stops, and push the retainer lock (C) into the socket holder retainer to lock the retainer.






6. Slide the socket holder (A) away from the bracket as shown to remove the shift cable (B) from the socket holder bracket (C). Do not remove the shift cable by pulling the shift cable guide (D).





7. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.

8. Remove the air cleaner housing Service and Repair.

9. Remove the 6 x 1.0 mm bolt securing the resonator bracket under the battery base bracket, and remove the battery base and the battery base bracket in the engine compartment.

10. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the selector control lever (D).





11. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).

12. Raise the vehicle on a lift, or apply parking brake, block both rear wheels, and raise the front of the vehicle. Make sure it is securely supported.

13. Remove the front splash shield.

14. Remove the heat shield.

15. Remove the bolt securing the shift cable bracket (A).





16. Remove the shift cable grommet (B), and pull out the shift cable (C).

17. Insert a new shift cable through the grommet hole (D), and install the grommet in its hole. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

18. Secure the shift cable bracket with the bolt.

19. Install the heat shield.

20. Make sure that the transmission is in R at the selector control lever.

21. Install the shift cable bracket (A) with the nuts.





22. Attach the shift cable end (B) to the selector control lever (C), then insert the control pin (D) into the selector control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip (E).

23. Install the battery base bracket and the battery base, and secure the resonator bracket under the battery base bracket with the bolt from under the vehicle.

24. Install the front splash shield.

25. Install the air cleaner housing Service and Repair.

26. Do the battery installation procedure Removal and Replacement.

27. Adjust the shift cable Adjustments.
