Upper Valve Body
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT1. Throttle valve retainer and check ball.
2. Lock-up relay valve.
A. Retainer for the plug with a magnetic finger and remove the plug.
B. Lock-up relay valve, control valve, and spring.
C. The sleeve retainer with a magnetic finger and then remove the sleeve.
3. Cut-back valve by removing the retainer with a magnetic finger and remove the cut-back valve and plug.
4. Throttle modulator valve by removing the retainer with a magnetic finger; then remove the plug, valve, and spring.
5. Accumulator control valve by removing the retainer with a magnetic finger, and remove the plug, spring, and valve.
6. Low coast modulator valve by removing the pin with a magnetic finger. Then remove the spring, and valve.
7. 2nd coast modulator valve by removing the retainer with a magnetic finger. Then remove the spring and valve.
8. Throttle cam. Loosen the bolt and remove the cam, spring, and collar.
9. Kick-down valve and spring by removing the pin with a magnetic finger. Then remove the kick-down valve with the sleeve and spring.
10. Throttle valve.
11. Spring and adjusting rings; note the number of adjusting rings.
Inspect
Valve springs and valves.
- Check for damage, squareness, rust and collapsed coils. Measure the free length and replace any spring if less than that shown.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Lock-up relay valve.
A. Sleeve into the bore.
B. Coat the remainder with petroleum jelly.
C. Retainer onto the end of the sleeve.
D. Control valve spring and lock-up relay valve into the bore.
E. Relay valve by hand until the control valve touches the end of the sleeve.
F. Plug and retainer.
2. Cut-back valve by installing the small end first.
3. Plug and retainer.
4. Throttle modulator spring and valve.
5. Plug and retainer.
6. Accumulator control valve.
7. Spring.
8. Plug and retainer.
9. Low coast modulator valve.
10. Spring.
11. Plug thick end first and pin.
12. Throttle valve.
13. Throttle valve spring.
14. Coat the retainer with petroleum jelly and install it into the valve body.
15. Adjusting rings and spring on throttle valve shaft.
Important
- Install the same number of adjusting rings as removed during assembly.
16. Slip the spring over the end of the valve shaft. Compress it and slide it into place.
17. Spring into throttle valve.
18. Kick-down valve with sleeve.
19. Pin to hold sleeve in place. Coat the pin with petroleum jelly.
20. Second coast modulator valve.
21. Valve and spring. Compress the spring and allow the retainer to fall into place. Make sure that the retainer fully covers the end of the spring.
22. Throttle cam by inserting the sleeve through one side of the cam. Install the spring with the hook through the hole in the cam.
23. Cam assembly on upper valve body. Check the position of the spring ends and tighten the bolt.
Important
- Make sure that cam moves on roller of kick-down valve.
24. Check ball.

- Make sure that pins and retainer are installed correctly.
