CLOCKSPRING CENTERING






NOTE: Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

1. Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
2. Open deck lid.
3. Remove four bolts to battery compartment cover and remove cover.
4. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.

WARNING: Wait two minutes for the system reserve capacitor to discharge before servicing any airbag components. Failure to do this may result in serious or fatal injury.

5. Remove the clockspring from the steering column Clockspring - Removal.
6. Rotate the clockspring rotor (7) clockwise to the end of its travel. Do not apply excessive force.
7. From the end of the clockwise travel, rotate the rotor about two and one-half turns counterclockwise. The engagement dowel (5) should end up at the bottom, and the airbag pigtail wires (1) and connector receptacles (3) should be at the top. Turn the rotor slightly clockwise or counterclockwise as necessary so that the slots for the clockspring locking pin (2) are in alignment.
8. The clockspring is now centered. Secure the clockspring rotor to the clockspring case to maintain clockspring centering until it is reinstalled on the steering column.
9. The front wheels should still be in the straight-ahead position. Reinstall the clockspring onto the steering column. Clockspring - Installation.

WARNING: Do not connect the battery negative cable Component Tests and General Diagnostics . Serious or fatal injury may result if the system test is not performed first.

10. Place battery access cover into place and install four bolts.
11. Close deck lid.
