Steering Intermediate Shaft, Removing and Installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

- Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.

- Position the steering wheel as far down as possible using the full range of the steering column adjuster.

- Turn the steering wheel to the center position (wheels are straight).

- Move the driver seat forward to the stop.

- Remove the bolt - 2 - and remove the steering intermediate shaft - 3 - from the steering column - 1 -.






- Place the vehicle on a hoist.

- Remove the rear noise insulation - arrow -.






- Remove bolt - arrow -.






- Remove the steering intermediate shaft - 1 - from the steering gear - 2 -.

Danger of getting burned by the exhaust system depending on the engine installed.

- Remove the protective boot on the straps - arrows - from the body.






- Remove the steering intermediate shaft downward.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- The threaded hole for the bolts must always be cleaned (for example, using a thread tap).

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Steering Column Overview ] Steering Column Overview.

- Install the steering intermediate shaft.

- Install the steering intermediate shaft - 3 - on the steering column - 1 - as far as the stop and tighten the bolt - 2 -.






- Install the protective boot - 2 - as far as possible. Make sure, that the arrow - 1 - points upward.






- Pull the protective boot - 1 - through the opening.






- Mount the protective boot - 1 -, without turning it, completely over the collar - 2 -.

- Then check the installation position of the protective boot above the marking inside the passenger compartment. If necessary, loosen the protective boot and turn it to the correct installation position.

- The mount the steering intermediate shaft - 1 - all the way onto the steering gear - 2 - and tighten the bolt - arrow -.






Further installation is in the reverse sequence to removal.
