Ball Joint: Service and Repair
Ball Joint
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Ring Spanner Insert, AF 21 mm (V.A.G 1332/7)
• Torque Wrench 40-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)
• Ball Joint Puller (T40010 A)
Removing
- Remove the control arm. Refer to => [ Track Control Arm ] Track Control Arm.
- Remove bolt - 1 -.
- Insert a washer or something similar - 2 - into the wheel bearing housing slot. The washer, or something similar, must the be exact same width as the slot.
- Install the bolt - 1 - until it touches the back of the washer.
- Side the wheel bearing housing slot by installing the bolt - 1 - further (one half turn).
- Remove the ball joint from the wheel bearing housing.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Install the ball joint - 1 - into the wheel bearing housing - 2 - as far as the contact surface - arrows -.
• If the ball joint - 1 - is not inserted up to the contact surface - arrows - then the threaded connection on the wheel bearing housing - 2 - could get damaged.
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Track Control Arm, Ball Joint, Guide Link and Level Control System Sensor Overview ] Track Control Arm, Ball Joint, Guide Link and Level Control System Sensor Overview.
- Install the control arm. Refer to => [ Track Control Arm ] Track Control Arm.
- Tighten wheel.
- Axle alignment is required, see table. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.
