Drive Wheel/Spur Gear Tapered Roller Bearing Pre-Load, Determining
Drive Wheel/Spur Gear Tapered Roller Bearing Pre-Load, Determining
Determine the New Adjusting Shim "S5 "
This adjustment is necessary when replacing the following parts:
• Transmission cover
• Center differential housing
• Gear carrier
• Output wheel/drive wheel
• Tapered roller bearing on the drive wheel/spur gear
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Magnetic Plate 50 mm Dia. (VW 385/17) from the Universal Measuring Tool (VW 385)
• Dial Gauge Holder (VW 387)
• Crown Wheel Adjustment Device (VW 521)
• Dial Gauge Extension from the Dial Gauge Adapter (2066)
• The outer race/tapered roller bearing for mounting drive wheel/spur gear is installed in the transmission cover.
• The outer race/tapered roller bearing - without shim - or mounting the drive wheel/spur gear is installed inside the gear carrier.
- Install the drive wheel/spur gear in the transmission cover.
Install the gear carrier on the transmission cover as follows:
• Installed position: The tab - arrow A - on the gear carrier - 1 - must installed into the opening - arrow B - inside the transmission cover.
- Next, mount the center differential housing - B - to the transmission cover using the bolts - A - and - arrows - (5 bolts).
- Then set the transmission cover with the attached center differential housing in vertical position making sure the center differential housing is facing downward.
- Install the measuring tools.
- Attach the (VW 387) in the hole in the transmission cover using the bolt - B - and nut.
- Position the dial gauge extension in the center of the measurement plate (VW 385/37).
- Set the dial gauge (3 mm measuring range) with 2 mm pre-load to 0.
- A - dial gauge extension from the (2066)
- Move the drive wheel/spur gear up and down using the crown wheel adjustment device (VW 521).
- Read the play off the dial gauge (for example 0.76 mm).
Example:
• Allocate adjustment shims, refer to the electronic parts catalog ETKA.
- Shim thickness "S5 " in this example is 0.86 mm.
