Rear Flange Shaft Seal on the Transmission

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Thrust Plate (VW 401)

Thrust Plate (VW 402)

Thrust Disc (VW 412)

Press Tube (30 - 100)

Thrust Piece for Final Drive at Gearbox (T40165)

Removing

Remove the center differential housing - B -. Refer to => [ Center Differential Housing and Center Differential with Transmission Installed ] Center Differential Housing and Center Differential With Transmission Installed.






Remove the circlip - arrow -.






Remove the flange shaft

- Position the center differential housing so the flange shaft does not come into contact with the (VW 401) and (VW 402) when pressing it off.






Pry out the shaft seal - 1 -.






Ignore - 2 -.

Installing

Lightly coat the shaft seal on the outer circumference with oil and then install it. Do not bend the seal.






- Fill the space between the sealing and dust lip half way with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).

Install the flange shaft.






The flange shaft ball bearing is installed.

When installing, the (30 - 100) presses on the inner race of the ball bearing.

- Tighten the vibration damper down on the center differential housing, if equipped.

- Mount the flange shaft seal - arrow -.






- Install the center differential and housing => [ Installing the Center Differential and Housing ] Center Differential Housing and Center Differential With Transmission Installed.
