Transmission Installation Tightening Specifications:.
- Before installing a replacement transmission, always clean out the ATF cooler and ATF pipes using compressed air (maximum 10 bar). Refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid Lines, Cleaning ] Service and Repair.
- Clean residue from the threaded holes in the cylinder block using a thread tap before installing.
- When installing a replacement transmission: Install the transmission support, transmission mount and tunnel crossmember on the new transmission. Refer to => [ Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Support Overview ] Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Support Overview or => [ Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Supports Overview ] Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Supports Overview.
- Mount the transmission onto the (T40173) and secure it using the tension strap - 1 - as illustrated.
Installing the torque converter incorrectly can cause damage to the ATF pump drive plate.
• Check the installed dimension of the torque converter. Refer to => [ Torque Converter ] Torque Converter.
- Inspect the aluminum bolts used to connect the engine to the transmission to see if they can be used again and mark them, if necessary.
- The following preparations must be made before connecting the engine and transmission:
- Turn the torque converter so that hole next to the notch - arrow - is visible in the lower cut-out in the transmission housing as illustrated.
• There is only 1 notch on the circumference; rotate the torque converter as needed.
- Insert the (T40170) in the transmission housing from below and secure it on the flange shaft - 1 -.
- Check if the alignment sleeves for centering the engine/transmission are in the cylinder block and insert them if they are not.
Vehicles with a 3.0L TFSI Engine and 3.0L TDI Engine
A Alignment sleeves
- Attach the transmission to the engine and the tighten the bolts - 1 and 6 through 11 -.
Vehicles with a 4.0L TFSI engine or a 4.2L FSI Engine
A Alignment sleeves
- Attach the transmission to the engine and the tighten the bolts - 1 and 6 through 11 -.
Vehicles with 4.2L FSI Engine
A Alignment sleeves
- Attach the transmission to the engine and the tighten the bolts - 1 and 6 through 11 -.
Vehicles with a 6.3L FSI Engine
A Alignment sleeves
- Attach the transmission to the engine and the tighten the bolts - 1 and 7 through 14 -.
All Vehicles:
- Remove the (T40170).
- Lift the transmission and tighten the bolts on the tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Support Overview ] Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Support Overview or => [ Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Supports Overview ] Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Supports Overview.
- Loosen the tension strap and remove the (V.A.G 1383 A) with the (T40173) from under the transmission.
• The following step is necessary to make sure the torque converter rests on the drive plate evenly and is not tilted.
- Press the torque converter - 2 - against the drive plate - 3 - slightly in the direction of the - arrow - using an assembly lever - 1 -.
- Attach the torque converter to the drive plate as follows:
• Use the (V.A.G 1332/14) to tighten.
- Install the first bolt - arrow - and tighten by hand (2 Nm).
- Continue turning the crankshaft 180° in the direction of the engine rotation using the (T40058) - arrow -.
• The 4.2L FSI engine is shown in the illustration.
- With the crankshaft in this position, tighten the bolt - arrow - to 60 Nm.
- Continue turning the crankshaft 60° and tighten the remaining 5 bolts to the tightening specification.
- Tighten the remaining engine/transmission connecting bolts.
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Install the parking lock emergency release cable. Refer to => [ Front Emergency Release Cable and Parking Lock ] Front Emergency Release Cable and Parking Lock.
- Attach the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
- Attach the left and right drive axles to the transmission flange shafts.
- Install the driveshaft heat shields.
- Install the ATF pipes to the ATF cooler. Refer to => [ ATF Cooler and ATF Pipes Overview ] Description and Operation
- Install the front muffler or the particulate filter and align the exhaust system free of tension.
- Vehicles with 4.2L FSI and 6.3L FSI engines: Install the left and right transmission mount. Refer to => [ Transmission Mount, Rear ] Transmission Mount, Rear.
• Check the vehicle data label or the designation on the rear final drive itself to determine which one is installed in the vehicle. Then select the correct rear final drive repair information.
- Install the driveshaft.
All Vehicles
- Install the right coolant pipe on the transmission.
- Install the noise insulation. Refer to "Underbody Trim Panels".
- Connect the battery.
Danger of causing damage to the control modules due to the excess voltage.
• Do not use a charger to jump start!
- Check the parking lock emergency release. Refer to => [ Parking Lock Emergency Release, Operating and Checking ] Parking Lock Emergency Release, Operating and Checking.
- Check the ATF level and correct if necessary. Refer to => [ ATF, Checking Level and Correcting ] ATF, Checking Level and Correcting.
