Shift Cable: Service and Repair






Selector Lever Cable

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - Remove Outside Mirror (80-200)

Socket and key (T40031)

Removing

- Place selector lever in position "D".

- Unclip mounting frame for selector lever boot - 1 - from center console and lift it upward and off - arrows -.





- Through opening - arrow - in shift mechanism, loosen bolt on selector lever cable approximately one turn using Socket (T40031).





Only loosen the clamping bolt - do not remove it.

Clamping screw is only accessible in selector lever position "D".

Selector lever must remain in position "D" while clamping bolt is loose.

- Remove front and rear noise insulation by loosening fasteners - 2 - and, if equipped, - arrow -.





Vehicles equipped with double pipe exhaust:

- Remove front crossmember - arrows -.





- Loosen left clamping sleeve - 1 - and slide it to the rear.





- Tie up left exhaust pipe to left side of the body.

Continuation for all vehicles:

- Mark installation position of support bracket for selector lever cable.

- Remove bolt - 1 - support bracket for selector lever cable.





- Press selector lever cable ball socket - A - off selector shaft lever using Pry Lever - Remove Outside Mirror (80 - 200).





Take care not to bend or kink selector lever cable.

- Remove lock washers - 1 -.





Always replace lock washers

- Remove noise insulation - 2 - and slide forward.

- Remove selector lever cable retaining clip - 1 - sideways.





- Remove selector lever cable - 2 - from shift mechanism.

Installing





Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

Torque specifications: => [ Selector Lever Cable Assembly Overview ] Description and Operation

Lightly grease eyelet and ball socket of selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease (G 052 142 A2) before installing.

- Slide noise insulation - 2 - over opening on selector lever cable - 3 -.

- Replace O-ring - 1 - on selector lever cable.





- Slide selector lever cable - 2 - into shift mechanism function unit - arrow -.

- Secure selector lever cable - 2 - with retaining clip - 3 -.

Installation position: Angled end of retaining clip faces toward shift mechanism.





- Secure noise insulation to shift mechanism with four new lock washers - 1 -.





- Tightly bolt selector lever cable - 5 - to support bracket - 4 -, tighten lock nuts - 6 - to do so.





- Press selector shaft lever - A - on transmission completely toward rear - arrow - until parking lock engages.





When parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn both front wheels in one direction at the same time.

- Then press selector shaft forward 3 detents so transmission is in "D" position.

- Ensure selector lever in vehicle is also in "D" position.

- Carefully press selector lever cable ball socket - 5 - onto selector shaft lever - 7 - in this position.





Take care not to bend selector shaft lever when pressing it on; support it if necessary, as otherwise selector mechanism can no longer be adjusted properly.

- Attach support bracket - 4 - to the console.

- Adjust selector lever cable => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting.

- Check shift mechanism => [ Selector Mechanism, Checking ] 01J Continuously Variable Transmission.

- Reconnect exhaust system and ensure it is not under stress.

- Install front crossbrace
