Bearing Pre-load for Ball Bearings for the Center Differential, Redetermining

This adjustment is necessary when replacing the following parts:

Transmission cover

Output wheel/drive wheel

Spacer sleeve

Center differential

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Arbor 50 mm Dia. (VW 432)

Thrust Pad (VW 447 H)

Ruler (T40100)

Digital Depth Gauge (VAS 6087)

The outer race/tapered roller bearing for mounting drive wheel/spur gear is installed in the transmission cover.

Drive wheel/spur gear, spacer sleeve and the center differential are installed.

- Mount the (T40100) on the clean joint surface on the transmission cover.

- Use a depth gauge - 1 - (for example (VAS 6087) ) to digitally measure the space between the ball bearing - 2 - and the ruler.

Mount tools VW 447h and (VW 432) to keep the center differential from tipping while measuring.

In this example, the dimension - a - = 142.45 mm.

- Add the height of the (T 40100) to this measurement.

Determine shim according to table.

Allocate adjustment shims, refer to the electronic parts catalog ETKA.

- In this example, the spacer sleeve thickness is 1.05 mm.
