Compressor

Compressor

Removing

CAUTION!
The A/C compressor insert may be removed only when the refrigerant circuit is empty.

- Remove the oil pump.

- Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 - and the refrigerant lines from the A/C compressor, refer to=> [ Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting from Compressor and Connecting ] Refrigerant Circuit.

CAUTION!
Risk of damaging refrigerant lines and hoses.

Do not stretch, kink or bend refrigerant lines and hoses.

- Close all open lines and connections on A/C compressor with suitable caps (avoid dirt and moisture from entering the system).

- Hold the A/C compressor driveshaft - A - in place using an open-end wrench and turn compressor drive unit - B - in the direction of - arrow C -.

Do not rotate the A/C drive shaft - A -.

Compressor driveshaft - A - can be slid into drive wheel through boot - E - after loosening threaded connection.

- Remove the electrical connector - 1 - for the A/C Compressor Regulator Valve (N280) from the bracket and disconnect it.

- Remove bolts - arrows -.

- Remove A/C compressor.

Installing

Installation is done is reverse order, observe the following:

- Remove the alignment bushings - F - from the compressor if necessary.

- Clean the contact surfaces on the A/C compressor thoroughly.

- Install the alignment sleeves - F - in the A/C compressor.

Make sure the alignment sleeves are seated correctly and the contact surfaces are clean. Alignment sleeves that are installed incorrectly and dirty or damaged contact surfaces can lead to alignment irregularities between the compressor and engine. Alignment irregularities over time lead to damage to the input shaft or compressor.

There is an unspecified amount of refrigerant oil in the removed compressor so follow the information on replacing the compressor.

- Tighten bolts - arrows -.

Tightening specification: 25 Nm.

- Connect electrical connector - 1 - on A/C Compressor Regulator Valve.

- If necessary, install the A/C compressor driveshaft - A - (in the engine drive wheel) and check the seating of it and the boot - E -.

- Check the A/C compressor and refrigerant line connections for damage or dirt. Refer to => [ Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting from Compressor and Connecting ] Refrigerant Circuit.

- Connect the refrigerant lines to the A/C compressor (tightening torque of bolts - A -), refer to => [ Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting from Compressor and Connecting ] Refrigerant Circuit, O-ring seal dimensions - B - and - C - additional information => [ Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting from Compressor and Connecting ] Refrigerant Circuit .

Check refrigerant lines and their bracket for sufficient distances to other components.

- Before installing A/C compressor driveshaft - A -, install compressor drive unit - B - on compressor by rotating 10 turns by hand in - direction of arrow C - in order to avoid damage to compressor when switching on for the first time.

Refrigerant oil can collect in the compressor compression chamber after removing the compressor or adding new oil (for example, with compressed air through the refrigerant circuit). Rotating forces the refrigerant oil out of the compression chamber.

- Hold the A/C compressor driveshaft - A - in place using an open-end wrench and turn compressor drive unit - B - in the direction of - arrow D -.

Tightening specification: 60 Nm.

Do not rotate the A/C drive shaft - A -.

After installing, check installation position of grommet - E - on drive wheel.

After installing the driveshaft - A -, check the boot - E - installation position.

The boot - E - is secured against slipping by the clamp on the power steering pump flange.

- Install the oil pump.

- Evacuate and fill refrigerant circuit.

- Fill the coolant and bleed the refrigerant circuit.

After finishing the repairs, perform the following work on the Climatronic Control Module (J255) using Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051/ in the "Guided Fault Finding" function:

- Check the DTC memory and erase any malfunctions shown.

- Follow the information on servicing the A/C system after installing the A/C compressor.

- Operate the A/C system after filling the refrigerant circuit, refer to => [ Operating After Filling Refrigerant Circuit ] Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning.

Note the information regarding operating the A/C system after filling.
