Hydraulic Control Module
Hydraulic Control Module
• General repair instructions, refer to => [ Repair Information ] Repair Information.
• Automatic transmission clean working conditions, refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.
• Always replace a dirty or faulty hydraulic control module.
Removing
- Remove the end cover.
- Remove the transmission control module (J217). Refer to => [ Transmission Control Module ] Transmission Control Module.
Danger of damaging the spring.
Do not remove or install the spring using sharp edged pliers or something similar.
If the spring wire gets damaged through notches or bends, the slider for selector lever position will not function correctly.
- Unhook the spring - 1 - on the slider for selector lever position - 2 - and on the selector shaft - 3 -.
- Pull the selector lever lock mechanism lever - 2 - downward out of bearing hole in the hydraulic control module. When doing this, pay attention to the roller - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove hydraulic control module.
The hydraulic control assembly must not under any circumstances be supported on the long pump shaft on the back side or raised up, otherwise the blades inside the power steering pump will get crushed and the pump will be damaged.
• Do not pay attention to items - A and B -.
- Remove the axial sealing elements - A - and - B - from the transmission.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
- Replace gaskets and O-rings.
- Replace the axial sealing elements - A - (quantity: 4) and - B -.
• Installation position: The axial sealing elements - A - must be installed with the sealing lips facing upward, as illustrated.
- Coat the axial sealing elements with ATF before installing - arrow -.
- Install the cover - arrow - for the sensor wheel II
• The tab on the back of the cover must be inserted into the small hole on the transmission.
- Push the transmission selector lever - 2 - clockwise all the way so that the shifting cam - 1 - is almost vertical (slightly angled to the right)..
- Press control piston - B - on rear side of hydraulic control module completely inward (left) until it engages into assembly spring - A -.
- Insert hydraulic control assembly into transmission. Align unit properly to fit without jamming.
• When installing control module, make sure that shifting cam (item 1 in Fig. A38-0094 ) engages into free groove - arrow - on control piston - B -.
- Install the bolts - arrows - hand-tight. Bolts - arrow 1 - is shorter than the other two bolts.
- Make sure the cover fits correctly.
• The anti-twist mechanism - B - must be inserted in the hole intended for it on the transmission.
• Ignore - B -.
Checking the function of the control piston
- Move the selector shaft on the detent plate - C - or on the transmission shift lever multiple times to the left and right.
• When doing this, the control piston - B - must travel outward and inward accordingly - arrow -.
If control piston does not move, shifting cam has not engaged into groove - arrow - at control piston on rear side of hydraulic control module. In this case:
- Remove the hydraulic control module and insert it again.
- Tighten the bolts - arrows -.
Install the slider for selector lever position
- Install the roller - 1 - with the shoulder of the selector lever lock mechanism lever on the lever.
- Slide the selector lever lock mechanism lever into the bearing hole in the hydraulic control module housing.
Danger of damaging the spring.
Do not remove or install the spring using sharp edged pliers or something similar.
If the spring wire gets damaged through notches or bends, the slider for selector lever position will not function correctly.
- Install the spring - 1 - into the selector shaft - 3 - and the selector lever lock mechanism lever - 1 -.
• For the sake of illustration, transmission is shown without hydraulic control module.
- Shift lever for selector shaft - 2 - forwards and backwards until it locks:
• The detent plate - arrow - moves backwards and forwards.
• When doing this, it must allow the roller - B - to engage in the individual notches.
• The selector lever lock mechanism lever - C - moves in steps toward front or rear.
• The roller must be installed wit the collar facing down so that it cannot be removed upward.
- Clean the selector shaft. Refer to => [ Selector Shaft, Cleaning ] Selector Shaft, Cleaning.
- Install the transmission control module with new O-rings. Refer to => [ Transmission Control Module ] Transmission Control Module.
- Install the end cover.
- Fill the ATF. Refer to => [ ATF, Filling for ATF Flush ] ATF, Filling for ATF Flush.
- After installing the transmission, check the ATF level and fill if necessary.
If the hydraulic control module was replaced, then perform this additional work:
• Perform adaptation for transmission control module.
• Perform an adaptation drive.
Use vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B) for this.
• (VAS 5051B) connected to the vehicle.
- Vehicle-specific access to (VAS 5051B) in the Guided Functions.
- Select under 02 - Transmission Electronics the test program 02 - Replace Hydraulic Control Unit.
