Tunnel Crossmember






Tunnel Crossmember

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A)

Wooden block

Removing





- Remove the rear noise insulation by loosening the fasteners - 1 and 2 - and, if equipped the - arrow -.

- Remove the front exhaust pipe rear bracket by removing bolts - 1 to 3 -.





- Loosen clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 -.





- Remove the left front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter.

CAUTION!
To prevent damage, coupling element of the front exhaust pipes must never be angled by more than 10 degrees.

- Tie up the right front exhaust pipe to the side and support it.

- Remove the front crossmember bolts - arrows - and crossmember.





- Position the engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A) plunger with a block of wood inserted in between the tunnel crossmember on the transfer case.

CAUTION!
The plunger and the block of wood must not be placed on the transmission oil pan.

This can damage the transmission oil pan and then it would have to be replaced.

- Raise the transmission slightly using the engine and transmission holder (V.A.G 1383 A).

- Remove the tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.





- Remove the nuts - 1 -.





- Remove the tunnel crossmember.

Installing





Install in the reverse sequence; note the following points:

- Install the tunnel crossmember - 2 -.

- Install the left front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter.
