ATF Level Checking and Correcting

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B)

Oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782)

ATF filler tool (VAG 1924)

Protective glasses

Rules of cleanliness for working on transmissions. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.

Test Conditions

Transmission not in emergency operating mode.

Vehicle on a flat surface

Selector lever in the "P" position.

Exhaust hose/hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.

Engine idling.

Air conditioning and heater switched off.

Vehicle diagnosis, resting and information system (VAS 5051B) connected, button Vehicle Self-Diagnosis - item 1 - pressed and "02 - transmission electronics" selected.

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature must not be higher than 30 degrees at the start of the test, allow the transmission to cool down if necessary.

ATF temperature appears in the display of vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B).

The ATF level will vary according to the temperature of the ATF.

Checking the ATF level at too low of a ATF temperature leads to overfilling.

If the ATF level is checked when the ATF temperature is too high, this will result in under filling.

Over and under filling leads to impaired functioning of transmission.

Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the planetary gearing in the automatic transmission 09L. Other fluids lead to malfunctions or to failure of the transmission.

Checking ATF temperature

Display on vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B):

- In selection - 1 -, click on the function "measured values".

ATF, Checking Level and Correcting

The ATF level is checked at the ATF inspection plug.

The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid drips out of the inspection hole (this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up) at a ATF temperature between 35 ° and 45 °C (for hot countries 50 °C).

- To ensure vehicle is absolutely level, use a 4 post lift or a service pit.

CAUTION!
The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF fluids!

Using different fluids will destroy the transmission.

- Fill the reservoir of the ATF filler tool (VAG 1924) with ATF for automatic transmission 09L.

- Secure the ATF filler tool (VAG 1924) reservoir as high as possible on vehicle.

- Start the engine and allow it to run at idle.

- Place the used oil collection and extraction device (VAG 1782) under the transmission.

CAUTION!
Wear protective glasses.

- When a ATF temperature of 35 °C is reached, remove the ATF inspection plug - arrow B - and drain off any excess ATF.

- Replace the ATF inspection plug seal - arrow -.

If ATF drips from inspection hole before the ATF has reached 40 °C, the ATF level - arrow - is OK.

The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45 °C (for hot countries 50 °C).

Add ATF if no ATF has escaped from the inspection plug hole by 45 °C.

- Tighten the ATF inspection plug with new seal to 80 Nm. The ATF check is now completed.

- End the function "011 - Measured values" by pressing the <- button.

- Press "022 - End output".

- Switch off ignition and unplug diagnostic connector.

Filling ATF

If no ATF escapes at the ATF inspection opening at 40 °C, the ATF must be topped off;

The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45 °C (for hot countries 50 °C). Allow the transmission to cool and check again.

- Guide the fill hook of the ATF filler tool (VAG 1924) into an opening - arrow - of the protective cap, do not push the cap up and in while doing so.

- Add the ATF using the ATF filler tool (VAG 1924) until the ATF drips from the inspection opening.

If the ATF level is too high or too low it will adversely affect the operation of the transmission.

- Tighten the ATF inspection plug with new seal to 80 Nm.

- Press <- button to end function "08 - Read measured value block".

- Select "06 - End output".

- Switch off the ignition and unplug the diagnostic connector.
