Centering Steering

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Bolt for steering centering (VAS 6224)

Steering Gear in Sectional View






1 Screw plug: 23 Nm
2 Install (VAS 6224) as far as possible by hand.
3 Steering rack
4 Steering gear housing

Vehicles with Heat Shield in Front of the Locking Bolt

Affects Vehicles with Air Suspension

- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.

Affects All Vehicles

- Remove noise insulation.

The heat shield - 2 - is not installed on all engine versions.






The heat shield - 1 - does not need to be removed.

- Remove the lower nuts - 3 - from the steering gear heat shield - 2 - (above the left catalytic converter).

Continuation for All Vehicles

- Remove engine cover.

- If equipped, remove the coolant reservoir - arrows - and move it to the side. Do not open the coolant system.






Vehicles with Heat Shield in Front of the Locking Bolt

- Remove the bolt - 4 - and the upper nut - 3 - from the steering gear heat shield - 2 - inside the engine compartment.






- Push the heat shield - 2 - to the side over the transmission.

Continuation for All Vehicles






- Insert the tool- arrow - from the top between the engine and the plenum chamber.

- Remove the locking bolt - arrow - on the steering gear.






- Move steering wheel slightly out of the center position.

- Have a second technician turn the (VAS 6224) - 2 - in the steering gear - 4 - until he feels it engage in the steering rack centering hole - 3 -.
