Power Steering Pump: Testing and Inspection
Power Steering Pump, Checking Delivery Pressure
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hose clamps (3094)
• Power steering tester (V.A.G 1402)
• Adapter (V.A.G 1402/2)
• Adapter (V.A.G 1402/3)
• Adapter set (V.A.G 1402/6)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
Test Prerequisites
• Ribbed belt/ribbed belt tension OK.
• Sealing of system.
• Hoses/lines are not kinked or constricted.
Checking
Affects Vehicles with Air Suspension
- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
Affects All Vehicles
- Remove engine cover at front - arrows -.
- Drain the coolant.
- Remove the coolant hose - 1 -.
- Remove the coolant hose - 2 -.
- Clamp off suction and return hose using (3094).
- Remove banjo bolt - 2 -. Disconnect pressure hose - 1 - and seals - 5 - from vane pump.
- Install (V.A.G 1402) as shown in illustration.
1. (V.A.G 1402)
2. Hose from adapter set (V.A.G 1402/6)
3. Adapter (V.A.G 1402/3)
4. Seal
5. Power steering pump
6. Banjo bolt
7. Pressurized line
8. Adapter (V.A.G 1402/2)
- Remove the (3094)
- Make sure that lever on pressure gauge stands in position - 2 -.
- Start engine without giving gas.
- Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock about 10 times.
- Switch off engine and, if needed, fill hydraulic fluid in reservoir.
• To avoid damage to pump, observe the following:
• Pressure gauge shut-off valve must not remained closed longer than 10 seconds during this test.
• Start engine without giving gas and run at idle.
• Read the pump pressure immediately after starting at idle speed (have it read by second technician, if necessary).
• Because pressure falls over the course of the test, the highest pressure shown is the decisive measurement.
- Now check delivery pressure.
- Start the engine and close shut-off valve to position - 1 - while engine is idling and read the pressure (the lever must point away from pressure hose). Do not perform measurement longer than 10 seconds.
Specification for Delivery Pressure: 120 to 130 bar
If specification is not obtained, replace pump. Refer to => [ Power Steering Pump ] Power Steering Pump.
- Switch off engine.
- Remove (V.A.G 1402).
- Install the banjo bolt.
- Install the coolant hoses - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Fill with coolant.
- Bleed the steering. Refer to => [ Steering, Bleeding after Replacing ] Steering, Bleeding after Replacing.
- Check power steering fluid level. Refer to => [ Power Steering Fluid, Checking ] Power Steering Fluid, Checking.
- Check the steering for leaks. Refer to => [ Steering System, Checking for Leaks ] Steering System, Checking for Leaks.
- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
