Work procedure

Rules of cleanliness for working on automatic transmissions => [ Transmission Cleanliness Guidelines ] Transmission Cleanliness Guidelines.

Observe general repair notes => [ Repair Instructions ] Repair Instructions.

When installing, bring all cable ties back to same positions.

Torque specifications:

- Check torque converter installation dimension - a - => [ Torque Converter, Installing ] Removal and Replacement

If the torque converter is not properly installed, the drive lugs on the torque converter and the ATF pump will be severely damaged when the transmission is attached to the engine.

- Make sure alignment sleeves - A - for centering engine/transmission are installed in engine. Install if necessary.

- Before putting engine and transmission together, rotate engine torque converter and drive plate so that holes or threaded holes are at the same height as opening on removed starter - arrow -.

- Make sure that no wires become pinched when connecting the transmission and engine.

Note the following when installing the transmission.

Risk of destroying transmission with incorrectly inserted torque converter.

Before and during fastening the engine/transmission connection bolts, check that the torque converter can still be turned behind the drive plate.

If torque converter cannot be rotated, the ATF pump drive plate and therefore the transmission can be destroyed when the connections are tightened to end torque.

- Attach transmission to engine.

- Use new bolts for drive plate to torque converter => Parts Catalog.

- First install new torque converter bolts in opening for removed starter and tighten by hand by turning crankshaft 1/3 turn in direction of engine rotation.

- Then tighten torque converter bolts in opening in removed starter to specified torque. To do this, rotate crankshaft 1/3 rotation each in direction of engine rotation.

Further installation in reverse order of removal, note the following:

- Install starter.

- Install transfer case.

- Install ATF lines => [ ATF Lines, Thermostat and Cooler, Assembly Overview ] Description and Operation

Risk of destroying Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217) (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.

- To discharge static, touch vehicle ground with hand (without glove).

- Connect electrical connector to transmission and lock screw connections by rotating clockwise opposite direction of - arrow -.

Selector shaft lever must not be bend when pressing selector lever cable on, counterhold if necessary.

- Carefully press selector lever cable - 2 - off selector shaft lever.

- Secure selector lever cable sleeve to bracket with new securing clip - 1 -.

- Adjust selector lever cable => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install exhaust system free of tension.

- Observe measures after connecting battery.

Do not use a charging unit as a starting aid. Vehicle control modules could be damaged.

- After installing an exchanged transmission or after repairing transmission => [ ATF Lines and Cooler, Cleaning ] Procedures

- Then check ATF level and top off => [ ATF Level, Checking and Filling ] ATF Level, Checking and Filling.

- On vehicles with air suspension, activate vehicle lifting mode.

Torque specifications:

The torque specifications apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated, or black-finished nuts and bolts.

Additional lubricant such as engine or transmission oil may be used, but do not use graphite lubricant.

Do not use degreased parts.

Tolerance for torque specification ± 15%.
