Balance Shaft: Service and Repair






Balance Shaft

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Old oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782 )

8 mm dia. drill bit

Removing

The engine is placed on the scissor lift table ( VAS 6131 A) or secured on the engine and transmission holder. Refer to => [ Engine, Securing to Engine and Transmission Holder ] Engine, Securing to Engine and Transmission Holder.

- Place old oil collecting and extracting device ( V.A.G 1782) under engine.

- Drain engine oil.

- Manual Transmission Remove clutch pressure plate. Refer to => Manual Transmission/Transaxle Manual Transmission/Transaxle and dual mass flywheel => [ Dual Mass Flywheel ] Dual Mass Flywheel.

- Vehicles with multitronic transmission: Remove damper unit. Refer to => [ Damper Unit ] Damper Unit and flywheel => [ Flywheel ] Flywheel.

- Vehicles with automatic transmission: Remove drive plate. Refer to => [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.

- Remove sealing flange, belt pulley side. Refer to => [ Sealing Flange with Crankshaft Seal, Belt Pulley Side, Replacing ] Sealing Flange With Crankshaft Seal, Belt Pulley Side, Replacing.

- Remove left and right timing chain covers. Refer to => [ Left and Right Timing Chain Covers ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.

- Remove lower timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.

- Remove power take-off drive chain. Refer to: Vehicles up to 04.2006 => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain, through 04.06 ] , vehicle from 04.2006 => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain, from 05.06 ] Power Take-Off Drive Chain, From 05.06.

- To protect against cuts, wrap point and cutting edges of 8 mm dia. drill bit with insulating tape.





- Secure balance weight - 2 - at rear of engine with 8 mm dia. drill bit - 1 -.

- Remove bolt - 3 - and remove balance weight from balance shaft.

- Remove bolt - 2 -, thereby counter-hold balance weight with drift and remove balance weight - 1 - from balance shaft at front of engine.





- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove bearing end bracket from balance shaft at rear of engine.





- Pull balance shaft rearward and out from cylinder block.

Installing

Secure crankshaft - 1 - in TDC position using crankshaft holder (T40069).





Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

The balance weights can only be positioned one way on balance shaft.

- Install power take-off drive chain. Refer to: Vehicles up to 04.2006 => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain, through 04.06 ] , vehicle from 04.2006 => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain, from 05.06 ] Power Take-Off Drive Chain, From 05.06.

- Install lower timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.

- Install oil filter housing. Refer to => [ Oil Filter Housing ] Oil Filter Housing.

- Install left and right timing chain covers. Refer to => [ Left and Right Timing Chain Covers ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.

- Install crankshaft seal, timing chain side. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Seal, Timing Chain Side, Replacing ] Crankshaft Seal, Timing Chain Side, Replacing.

- Install sealing flange, belt pulley side. Refer to => [ Sealing Flange with Crankshaft Seal, Belt Pulley Side, Replacing ] Sealing Flange With Crankshaft Seal, Belt Pulley Side, Replacing.

- Manual Transmission Install dual mass flywheel. Refer to => [ Dual Mass Flywheel ] Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch pressure plate => Manual Transmission/Transaxle Manual Transmission/Transaxle

- Vehicles with automatic transmission: Install drive plate. Refer to => [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.

- Add engine oil and check oil level.
